Two teams from Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR), Euphoria and Eureka, earned a second-place finish for the English category and a third-place finish for the Bahasa Malaysia category at the Showcase of Projek Warga (Project Citizen) IPTS held on 14 and 15 March 2009 at the Multipurpose Hall of Sunway University College in Kuala Lumpur.
Euphoria and Eureka were made up of 31 UTAR undergraduates from different degree programmes and led by Ivan Ooi Jieun Vei and Lee Fong Hong respectively.
Euphoria presented a summary of their findings and solutions to their project titled Road & Traffic Condition Between Bandar Makhota Cheras & Bandar Sungai Long in English while Eureka presented theirs about Perkhidmatan & Kualiti Pengawal Keselamatan di Bandar Sungai Long in Bahasa Malaysia at the Showcase. For their efforts and achievements in the community-based projects, members of Euphoria and Eureka took home prize money and a certificate each.
Fook Oi Yee, Head of the Department of Soft Skills Competency in UTAR Petaling Jaya Campus, said, "Before starting the project, my colleague, Sevaneswari and I attended 'Training for the Trainer' from 19 - 21 December 2008. With the training, we then guided both teams in their binder and panel preparation as well as their presentation for the Showcase."
Sevaneswari added, "The objective is to encourage students to actively participate and be interactive in research, development and implementation of the public policy. This will allow the students to expand their ability and sense of social responsibility towards the country."
The UTAR teams were among 13 teams, seven for the Bahasa Malaysia category and six for the English Category, from eight local private higher education institutions that took part in Project Warga IPTS.
The Showcase of Projek Warga IPTS was the final of four phases of Projek Warga for private institutions of higher learning organised by Initiaf Kewarganegaraan Malaysia (Malaysia Citizenship Initiative) of Universiti Sains Malaysia. It was also the climax of an 8-week project where the participating teams displayed knowledge and experience in identifying community problems and formulating public policy to resolve them, their works and presentation judged and prizes awarded to the three best team efforts and works in two language categories.
