Young Chemist Award for UTAR's Lecturer

Assistant Professor Dr. Sim Kooi Mow, a chemistry lecturer from the Faculty of Engineering and Science, Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR), has been awarded a 42nd International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) Young Chemist Award (Programme A) by the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC), UK, in conjunction with the 42nd IUPAC Congress, which will be held from 2 - 7 August 2009 in Glasgow, Scotland, UK.

The Young Chemist Award is given to 30 young scientists who are below 40 years old and from developing and economically disadvantaged countries. Their oral or poster presentation abstracts to be presented at the Congress have been deemed worthy for the award by RSC.

This is the second chemistry award for Dr Sim. "I received the Tan Sri Datuk Ong Kee Hui Postgraduate Chemistry Award 2001 from Institute Kimia Malaysia (IKM) for the best chemistry postgraduate thesis in 2001," he disclosed.

Dr. Sim enthused, "I felt very happy to be able to receive this international award and to attend such a prestigious Congress." "I did not expect to be recognised for anything. I hope this award shows and will encourage our Chemistry students that we can be on par, if not better, with our international peers," he added.

Dr. Sim is active in the research of natural products chemistry. He has isolated about 130 natural products from Alstonia, Holarrhena, Kopsia, Tabernaemontana, Piper, Garcinia, Murraya and Artocarpus and has to date published 23 papers in international refereed journals.

RSC is a professional body in the United Kingdom for chemical scientists and an international learned society which advances chemical sciences through its network of over 46,000 members globally. The society organises activities covering education, conferences, science policy and the promotion of chemistry to the public.

IUPAC is a scientific and international body with 54 National Adhering Organisations and 11 Associate National Adhering Organisations. IUPAC is known throughout the world as an authority on the nomenclature for chemical compounds, terminology, standardised methods for measurement, atomic weights and many other critically evaluated data.
