Three UTAR postgraduate students bagged prizes at the Inter -Varsity Student Paper Presentation Contest 2010 (S-SPEC 2010) held from 15 to 16 March 2010 at University Teknologi Malaysia in Skudai, Johor.
Tan Pei Ling, who obtained her bachelor's honours degree in Biotechnology from UTAR and is currently pursuing her Master's degree in the same discipline in UTAR, won the 2 nd prize in the paper (oral) presentation in the postgraduate division of the contest. For her achievement, she took home a trophy, a cash prize of RM1,000 and also a certificate.
Phang Ying Ning, who also graduated with a bachelor's honours degree from UTAR but in Chemistry and is now reading her Master's degree in Chemistry in UTAR, won the 2 nd prize in the poster presentation in the postgraduate division. She received a cash prize of RM200 and a certificate for her triumphant effort.
Ding Teck Yuan, who is a postgraduate student of Biotechnology at the University's Faculty of Engineering and Science in UTAR Kuala Lumpur Campus, was among the top eight finalists for the paper presentation in the postgraduate division and walked away with the consolation prize.
They were all first-timers as participants of a contest that involved the submission of abstracts, an oral presentation or a poster presentation of the submissions. For them, the experience of participation was rewarding and educational.
On the reward of her experience at the contest, Tan said, "I gained a lot of experience from this competition. It helped me to improve my presentation skills and the experience will help me in my future presentation."
Ding, likewise, said, "The competition helped me to gain confidence and to improve presentation skills."
In the same vein, Phang said, "The event is an eye-opener to me in terms of experiencing the atmosphere of presentations and competitions. It equipped me with the techniques of answering questions and gave me insights into anticipating the types of questions which are frequently asked by the examiners and public."
The entries in the form of written abstracts for the paper and poster presentation from the UTAR students were among 240 entries submitted by participants from 22 institutions of higher learning for the undergraduate and postgraduate divisions of the contest.
This year's contest saw finalists from six other institutions, including Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), Universiti Teknologi Mara (UITM), Universiti Malaysia Pahang (UMP), Universiti Malaya (UM), National University of Singapore (NUS) and Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka (UTeM). The finalists for the both undergraduate and postgraduate divisions were required to submit full paper for the abstracts they had earlier submitted for the contest themed "Integrating creative mind in science and technology for a sustainable future".
S-SPEC is an annual event organised by a Student Chapter organization at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia in collaboration with Shell Corporation as the sponsor. The 2010 contest was open to all undergraduates and postgraduates from all courses and disciplines and attracted the participation of students from local and foreign institutions of higher learning.
