Two teams from Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR) made it to the Malaysian final of the HSBC Young Entrepreneur Awards 2009-2010 competition which saw one team bagging the Silver Award and the other receiving the Certificate of Excellence at a presentation ceremony held at the HSBC Headquarter in Kuala Lumpur on 6 May 2010.
Ivan Ooi Jieun Vei and Lim Boon Seong, who participated as CHAMPS-ELYSEES team, won the Silver Award that came with the HSBC self-development fund of RM10,000, a trophy and certificate for each of them, and a one-week entrepreneurial tour with other local award winners of the competition from six countries. Both Ooi and Lim are final year students of UTAR Bachelor of Marketing (Hons).
Their winning entry detailed a business plan to offer a product called W'hole Puncher, a 2-in-1 stationery device that punches holes in documents for filing and dispenses wax which hardens as reinforcing rings around the holes.
On winning the award, Ooi said, "Winning this award is an added bonus to my tertiary education as I have made good use of the knowledge gained throughout my education years and put them into practice."
Lim said, "It actually did not matter if I did not win. It is about how much I have learned and further improved myself. Winning is just a bonus to show success in a learning process and an addition to my CV."
Participated as team YTL-GO, Tai Woei Tyng, Yim Teck Kien and Lam Keat Yee, all final year undergraduate students of Actuarial Science at UTAR, received the Certificate of Excellence and a gift cheque worth RM2,000 per team for being one of the five finalists.
In addition, Mah Cheng Wei and Tan Kim Soon, third year students of business administration specialising in Entrepreneurship, received the Certificate of Merit and a gift cheque worth RM1, 000 per team for a meritorious performance in the competition.
Present at the ceremony to witness the event and share their joy were UTAR academic staff from the Faculty of Information and Communication Technology and the Faculty of Accountancy and Management of the University.
The HSBC Young Entrepreneur Awards made its debut in Malaysia in 2001 and is a business plan competition open to full-time post-secondary students with the aim of encouraging creativity in entrepreneurship and business among students and providing them with opportunities to learn how to write business plans and sharpen their presentation sills. The annual competition is also held in five other countries in Asia - Thailand, Brunei, the Philippines, Hong Kong and Bangladesh.
