UTAR is champion of Schneider Electric University Challenge

A team of three UTAR students called Synergy led by Mr Chua Kein Huat, a lecturer from UTAR Faculty of Engineering and Science, is the champion of 3rd Annual Schneider Electric University Challenge 2011, organized by Schneider Electric Malaysia. Coming from different areas of expertise, the members of the team were Wong Yee Shiuan, a Materials and Manufacturing Engineering student; Tan Kock Li, Mechatronics Engineering, and Lui Cai Jin, Electrical and Electronic Engineering.

The students received their award of RM15,000 and the Schneider Electric University Challenge Trophy from the Minister of Energy, Green Technology and Water YB Dato' Sri Peter Chin Fah Kui at a prize giving ceremony on 23 February 2012.

The winning entry was "Automated Day Lighting, Presence Detection HVAC and Heat Recovery System" which uses day lighting to light up a dark room. For the Presence Detection HVAC (Heat Ventilation Air Conditioning) system, it switches on a modified diffuser based on human presence. For a heat recovery system, hot waste water and sunlight is used to preheat clean water, thus saving energy to boil the clean water.

About 42 teams of engineering students from 16 universities all over the country registered for the annual competition.

Schneider Electric's University Challenge is a competition designed to inspire engineering students in Malaysia by challenging them to develop creative and innovative proposals that solve practical energy usage problems.

Also present at the ceremony was Schneider Electric (Malaysia) country president Peter Cave.
