Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR) taekwondo team raked in seven medals from the inaugural UTAR Taekwondo Poomsae Invitation Championship 2012 which was held at UTAR Perak campus on 15 July 2012.
A cohesive team of seven taekwondo exponents brought cheers to the university with their sterling effort of seven medals - four gold, two silver and one bronze.
The gold medals were contributed through the individuals, pair and team poomsae non-sparring categories. Financial Economic student, Vinon Koh Yung How, dished out a superb display to land the gold medal in the male individual event. His golden feat was emulated by Accounting student, Gan Xiang Yan, who clinched the gold medal in the female individual event. It was also a day of double joy for Gan, who partnered with Foundation in Science student, Tieu Jun Liang, to contribute two additional gold medals through the pair event.
The female individual event also yielded two silver medals which were won by Accounting student, Chong Xin Yi, and Banking and Finance student, Lai Mei Hsien. Their teammate Ho Jing Shan, a Public Relations student, took home the bronze medal.
Organised by UTAR Taekwondo Club, the championship was aimed at encouraging student's participation in co-curricular activities in order to promote teamwork and holistic education. The championship drew participation from nine teams, namely, PMG Taekwondo Club (WTF), SOMA Team, HELP University Team, DS Club, Advance Taekwondo Persatuan Taekwondo Batu Pahat Team, Chonkwon Taekwondo Club, UTAR Taekwondo Club, JASS Taekwondo Club and Imperial Batu Gajah Club.
