It was a euphoric moment for first year Construction Management student Lim Chiou Jye when she received a scholarship worth RM25,000 from Pesona Metro Holdings Berhad on 8 April 2013 to pursue her undergraduate course.
Lim, one of the eight UTAR undergraduates from the Faculty of Engineering and Green Technology (FEGT) interviewed for the scholarship, has described the offer as a windfall. "It was unexpected and I was really surprised to be chosen as Persona Metro's scholarship recipient," said the Penangite who is currently in her third trimester.
Despite the usual stereotype about Construction Management being unpopular amongst females, Lim shared her reason for choosing the three-year programme, "I actually checked the list of subjects taught throughout the duration of the programme. I can say that the subjects listed are very much to my liking and cover a lot of areas."
When asked if she has faced any challenges in her studies, the eldest among five siblings explained, "Not as of yet since I am still in my first year. But I do tell myself that I need to stay positive and work twice harder." The optimistic student further added that the scholarship helps lessen her parent's financial burden. "I did part-time work before this but now I can fully focus on my studies."
Lim also extended her heartfelt gratitude to staff from the faculty such as Deputy Dean (Student Development and Industrial Training) of FEGT Dr Doh Shu Ing, Head of Department of the Department of Construction Management Mr Lee Lim Tat, lecturer Mr Wai Soon Han and tutor Mr Chang Kok Yung for helping her in different ways and also encouraging her to apply for the scholarship.
Pesona Metro scholarship is open for students undertaking built environment courses such as construction management, quantity surveying and civil engineering.
Lim is the second UTAR student to be awarded the Pesona Metro Scholarship since it was introduced to the University.
