UTAR Institute of Chinese Studies Adjunct Professor Prof Dr Lim Chooi Kwa received the Sim Mow Yu Teacher Award 2013 from Jiaozong which is the United Chinese School Teachers' Association of Malaysia (UCSTAM) in a ceremony held at New Era College on 6 October 2013.

 

The Sim Mow Yu Teacher Award, one of Jiaozong's key initiatives is aptly named after Datuk Sim Mow Yu for his excellent efforts and indomitable spirit in upholding Chinese education as a lifelong career. The recipient of the Award epitomizes such noble objectives of being a role model teacher who promotes education with exemplary efforts in contributions to teaching and learning in the Chinese community.

 

"This is a great honour. I put my heart and soul into education and the Chinese culture to contribute my best efforts. However, I still need to work harder to fully achieve my objectives," said Prof Lim in the delivery of his testimonial at the ceremony. "Thanks to my students who have nominated me and thanks to my friends, colleagues and family who support me so that I can focus on my teaching and research without worry," added Prof Lim.

Prof Lim who was born in Kedah has served in the education sector for more than 40 years. Having worked as a lecturer and associate professor at Universiti Malaya for 18 years, Prof Lim is one of the pioneers of UTAR Chinese Studies Department which was established in August 2002. The Department offers Bachelor of Arts (Hons) Chinese Studies, which is one of the first eight degree programmes offered by UTAR. Prof Lim's efforts in assisting the academic fraternity to drive the Department's mission of humanities education and academic research for students' moral character and intellectual capacity, has helped to propel the Department to be the flagship of Chinese Research Centre in this region.
