UTAR Film Club bags first prize

UTAR Film Club’s team, Independence Entertainment Group comprising UTAR alumni and students, emerged the winner of the Station One Micro Movie Competition recently.

Themed “Stories of yours, mine and his/hers” (你我他的故事), the competition by Station One Leisure Café saw more than 20 entries depicting stories about love relationship, family love and friendship. 12 entries were then shortlisted and were judged based on popularity and number of views. Of all the competitive entries uploaded on YouTube channel, the entry by our team Independence Entertainment Group garnered the most views and was thus announced the deserving winner.

Titled Love in Mid Air (《半空中的恋爱》), the 10-minute short film directed by Biotechnology alumnus Allen Yeoh Ze Qing was about three good friends (starring Advertising alumnus Chai Zhen Yan, Psychology student Cheah Ping Khoe, also the Assistant Director, and Marketing student Chai Siew Ting) who soon found themselves entangled in a love triangle. “All three went their separate ways eventually, adding a tinge of melancholy to the film. So it’s actually a sad love story,” explained Yeoh, who also wrote the script.

Besides winning the competition and walking away with a whopping RM 10,000 cash prize, Yeoh’s team also bagged a subsidiary award with Chai receiving the Best Actor Award.

“I thank all the crews for their effort and hard work, which obviously paid off well. Winning this competition will give us more confidence to strive further to achieve our dreams. We will continue to produce more films,” shared Yeoh, who also believes that there will be a chance for his team to be on the global stage one day.

Independence Entertainment Group crews also included Banking and Finance student Chia Chee Yong and Marketing student Wai Kang Chuen as Videography Directors, Information Systems Engineering student Foong Wai Lap, Foundation in Arts student Yeong Yiong Yi and Public Relations student Tan Pei Chin as Art Directors, Journalism student Clifford Lee Chin Ee as the photographer and Business Administration student Lee Haw Hua as the music composer.
