UTAR Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences (FMHS) was well represented in the recent International Congress of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine (ICPaLM), held in Shangri La Hotel, Kuala Lumpur from 26th- 28th August 2014.
ICPaLM was jointly organised by the College of Pathologists of Malaysia and the Academy of Medicine of Malaysia. It also has the participations of the World Association of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine (WASPaLM), the Academy of Medicine of Singapore and the Academy of Medicine of Hong Kong.
The FMHS team who participated in ICPaLM comprised the Dean Emeritus Professor Dr Cheong Soon Keng, Deputy Dean (Academic Development and Undergraduate Programme, Department of Medicine) Emeritus Professor Dr Boo Nem Yun, Deputy Dean (R&D and Postgraduate Programmes, Department of Pre- Clinical Medicine) Professor Dr Yap Sook Fan and Head of Department (Department of Pre- Clinical Services) Professor Yasmin Abdul Malik.
Emeritus Professor Dr Cheong, Emeritus Professor Dr Boo and Professor Dr Yap were among the 66 national and international speakers invited to deliver their lectures during this conference. Professor Yasmin was invited to chair one of the plenary sessions.
UTAR lecturers and postgraduate students participated in the e-poster presentation, which is a way for researchers to communicate their research findings in ICPaLM. A total of 107 posters were presented at the conference.
ICPaLM awarded a total of five prizes to recognise the e-poster presentations; three for best posters and five consolations. UTAR researchers won one best poster prize and three consolation prizes. The research group headed by Emeritus Professor Dr Cheong Soon Keng won one best poster prize and one consolation prize and the other two consolation prizes were won by the research group headed by Prof Dr Yap Soon Fan and Associate Professor Dr Alan Ong respectively.
Ms Nalini Devi, a postgraduate student supervised by Associate Professor Dr Alan Ong, received the consolation prize from Dr Arni Talib, Chairperson of the Organising Committee, ICPaLM 2014.
