UTAR Lee Kong Chian Faculty of Engineering and Science (LKC FES) Biomedical Engineering student Liew Guo Guang, who is very much talented in prose writing, earned a winning spot at the University of Malaya (UM) Chinese Studies The 32nd Literature Fortnight Chinese Creative Writing Competition (马大中文系第32届文学双周:《H2O》文学创作比赛) Presentation Ceremony held at the UM on 15 April 2017.

Liew‘s winning entry titled “White Fish (《白鱼》)” earned him a Judge Award in the Prose category. He walked away with a certificate and cash prize of RM150.

His winning prose was thought-provoking and aimed to explore the ethics of using animals as experimental products in scientific research and experimentation.

According to Liew, the victory was very meaningful to him as it was his first time to win in an off-campus literature award. He said, “I think most of us would not write or participate in a literature writing competition after graduating from secondary school. However, I have always believed from the bottom of my heart that being eminent in the journey of literature is a dream worthy to persist.”

He participated in the competition inadvertently via an announcement found on the Facebook. He said, “I participated in the competition with an aim to hone my writing skill.” He added, “Although I am busy with my studies, I still manage to arrange some time to do my writing and all of these experiences are valuable for me. Hence, one should always make an appoint to write as it opens up possibilities to advance in future.”

As a young writer, his little wish is to find the comradeship among the literary lovers in the campus to encourage and support each other in the writing journey.

Organised by Department of Chinese Studies of UM, the Alumni Association of the Department of Chinese Studies of UM and One Asia Foundation, supported by Hai-O Foundation, The Writers’ Association of Chinese Medium of Malaysia, Sin Chew Plus and Centre for Malaysian Chinese Studies, the competition aimed to nurture more promising young writers and successors for the Malaysian Chinese Literacy circle.
