STOMP, UTAR Sungai Long’s Frisbee team, was listed as the 4th runner up after participating for the third time in the annual Sunway Ultimate Tournament (SUT) 2017, which was held from 8 to 9 July 2017 at Sunway University.
Organised by the Sunway University Frisbee Club, the Frisbee tournament was open to all universities as STOMP consisted of 21 athletes, 14 males and 7 females. The aim for organising this tournament was not only to promote the sport Frisbee as one of Malaysia’s most favourable sport, but it also served as a platform that garnered top Frisbee team players that represented universities and colleges across Malaysia. At the same time, the tournament also encouraged the team players to instil the idea of teamwork among members while they improvise the tactical and physical skills while competing in the tournament.
During the two-day period, the tournament was split into two rounds where the first day in the group stage, the teams were each given a total of 60 minutes per game, with half a minute mark or 6 points with the score cap of 13 points while the second day was the knock-out round (semi-finals), where the teams were given 70 minutes per game to compete, with half time at a 35 minutes mark of 7 points and with a score cap of 15 points.
Although STOMP managed to reserve the 3rd place in the group stage and knock Hedgehogs off during the semifinals, STOMP ultimately landed themselves in the 4th place after losing their battle to 4.3N (UTAR, Kampar) 5-9 and to Inti Stingrays (Inti Nilai) 7-8.
Despite not being able to win the first place in the tournament, the captain of STOMP mentioned that this competition was overall a humbling experience for his team as the tournament had taught them to be more aware of their weakness and fully utilise their strengths and potential for future upcoming tournaments.
“Overall, our athletes have performed well and given their full commitment for all the matches. In all, it was a good experience because they can improvise their physical, technical, tactical and psychological skills in this competitive open tournament. Our team needs to improve their skills, be aware of their weakness and learn to keep up their regular training in order to achieve better results in the near future,” said the team captain of STOMP, Ian Lim Wen Wei.
