Big wins for Wushu Club

The Wushu Club won 11 medals in the 26th National Wushu Championship 2017. It was organised by the Wushu Federation of Malaysia from 7 to 8 October 2017 at Tunku Abdul Rahman University College, Penang. They took home another 16 medals at the Malaysia International Wushu Tournament 2017, which was organised by the Kuala Lumpur Wushu Federation of Malaysia from 21 to 2 July 2017 at Sky Park One City Mall, Subang Jaya, Selangor.

Both tournaments consisted of three categories, namely Sanda (散打), Taiji Thuishu (太极推手) and Traditional Taolu (传统套路). Four hundred contestants were present at the national tournament and 300 contestants at the international tournament. International contestants also included those from Taiwan, China, Singapore, Japan and Indonesia.

As a support for future events and developments of Wushu, the tournaments aimed to expose the public to traditional Chinese martial art culture as well as to introduce them to SandaTaiji Thuishu and Traditional Taolu. The Wushu Club athletes were able to interact and learn from other contestants which helped enhance their skills.

With the same objectives, the Wushu Club with the Perak Wushu Lion and Dragon Dance Federation and Perak Non-Islamic Affair also co-organised UTAR Wushu Championship 2017 from 25 to 27 August 2017 at the Kampar Campus. The club won 23 medals altogether. The tournament successfully attracted the participation of over 200 athletes from Penang, Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, Perak, Kedah, Kelantan, Negeri Sembilan and Pahang.

“Being able to interact with other contestants from different backgrounds was very much helpful for us to learn new skills. We were able to exchange ideas, opinions and knowledge, which in return helped us to understand better about our strengths and weaknesses. The tournaments were definitely a good platform to expand our experience, reassess our judgements and increase our self-confidence,” said Wushu Club President Chua Chung Li.
