UTAR Structural Earthquake Stability (SES) Intra-University Competition 2018 was organised by Student Chapter of The Institution of Engineers, Malaysia (IEM) and Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) in collaboration with the Department of Civil Engineering from Lee Kong Chian Faculty of Engineering and Science (LKC FES). The competition was held at Sungai Long Campus on 18 March 2018.
Present at the opening ceremony were LKC FES Deputy Dean Dr Lim Jee Hock, SUNWAY Constuction Representative David Ho Song Wei and Organising Chairperson Heng Ying Hao.
Heng
In his remark, Heng mentioned about an earthquake that struck Ranau, Sabah, 3 years ago with a magnitude of 6.0 and also a recent one with a magnitude of 5.2. “Therefore, we as future engineers, have to be aware of these issues. We should not assume Malaysia as an earthquake-free country, but instead, we should implement the seismic design in Malaysia in order to prevent tragedy from occurring.”
Ho
Ho advised the participants to take this competition as an opportunity to learn and apply the fundamental skills into work. “Teamwork is essential in this competition. Also, competition is not only about winning or losing. It is a platform for you to learn, and get to know your strengths and weaknesses,” said Ho.
Dr Lim
“The SES competition aimed to provide the students with the experience of earthquake engineering through a small-scale structural model. Throughout the competition, students will be able to enhance their engineering knowledge, management skill, creativity and innovation in designing a cost-effective structure to resist seismic loading,” said Dr Lim.
The participants’ models will be first evaluated based on the construction criteria. The model will then be placed on the shaking table to test its stability. There are 7 levels altogether, and each level will be tested for 45 seconds. Judges present at the competition were Head of Civil Engineering Department Assoc Prof Ir Dr Lim Siong Kang, Dr Lim, Dr Lau See Hung and Ir Lee Peir Tien.
