Contemporary issues, including plastic problem,
e-hailing services and Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) were among the topics
presented at the 5MP & Poster Competition held on 25 and 28 November 2019 at
UTAR Sungai Long Campus.
Organised by UTAR Faculty of Accountancy and
Management, the 5MP competition aimed at sharpening students’ thinking
skills and ability to create a compelling yet focused delivery of their
projects that they have worked for two trimesters within five minutes, in a
single slide. Meanwhile, the poster competition sets to evaluate poster and
presentation based on layout and design, technical competency, content
accuracy, novelty and many more.
“The competition is an extension of the students’
final year project (FYP). The FYP aims to expose students to real-life
international business and management problems and opportunities by
reviewing vast amount of literature, proposing hypothesis, conducting
researches, collecting and analysing relevant data, as well as interpreting
its results and finally recommending solutions to the research problems,”
said FAM Dean Dr Sia Bee Chuan, explaining the constructive intentions of
FYP.
With McDonald’s Malaysia as the main sponsor, the
5-minute presentation competition was evaluated by staff and external judges
from the industries, namely McDonald’s Marketing Manager Tan Li Lian, BDO
PLT Talent Recruitment People and Culture Director Thong Siew Fong, One WSM
Property Sdn Bhd Corporate Division Tiffany Tang, B.I.G. Industrial Gas Sdn
Bhd Melissa Wong, FAM Head of Department of Economics Sia Bik Kai, FAM Head
of Department of International Business Farah Waheeda binti Jalaludin, Head
of Department of Building and Property Management Low Chin Kian and Head of
Department of Accountancy Shamini Kandasamy.
Meanwhile, the poster competition was judged by FAM
Deputy Dean for R&D and Postgraduate Programmes Dr Pok Wei Fong, Belt and
Road Strategic Research Centre Chairperson Prof Dr Cheng Ming Yu and FAM
academics Dr Lim Chee Seong, Dr Tun Yin Li, Dr Omar Hamdan Mohammad
Alkharabsheh, Dr Teddy Lian Kok Fei and Dr Aik Nai Chiek.
The participants were shortlisted to 14 finalists for
poster competition while 12 finalists were shortlisted for 5MP competition
and were judged on 25 and 28 November 2019 respectively.

Chin found that the level of education does not positively relate to the awareness of recycling
While factors such as parents’ expectation and maintaining study loans may affect behaviours, Kue found that an individual’s attitude determines whether he or she would cheat in the examination
Ong noted that those with better awareness on BRI see the initiative in a more positive view
Khoo’s presentation on facial recognition in the banking industry won her the McChoice Award after she impressed Tan with her time management and clear problem statement and solutions

Aside from evaluating the participants, esteemed external judges also shared advice and tips on giving a good and informative presentation.
Tan applauded the participants and reminded them that they were already making progress by joining the competition
Melissa Wong sees the participation as a good move to learn new skills and gather confidence
With 25 years of working experience in the media sector, Tiffany Tang advised the participants to present their ideas in a story-telling manner, putting priority on body gestures and vocal before the topic
As a toastmaster herself, Thong said that nervousness is expected and a person can enhance their presentation with personal stories as well as vocal intonation and variety
The audience also stood a chance to win prizes during the Kahoot! online-based quiz on FYP and McDonald’s
