An impressive haul of 16 medals

It was a remarkable moment for 12 UTAR students when they clinched a total of 16 medals—eight gold, six silver and two bronze in the Perak Wushu Championship 2019 held at AEON Big Falim, Ipoh from 13 to 14 April 2019.

Organised by Perak Wushu, Lion and Dragon Dance Association, the Perak Wushu Championship 2019 was open for players from Perak. Aimed at promoting a positive environment for youth development, the Perak Wushu Championship 2019 also served as a platform for young students and teens to engage in physical activity that promotes social development through teamwork and build confidence in their physical abilities.

A total of five events, namely Traditional Routine, Sanda, Taichi Tuishou, Traditional Tailu and Tailu were held in the two-day championship. The championship also aimed to help the young participants become well-rounded by promoting social, emotional, physical and intellectual growth.

The gold medalists were Psychology students Wong Jun Kit, Youn Jia Xin and Soh Sei Ern, Information Systems Engineering student Poon Yong Xuan, Business Information Systems student Wong Weng Keen, and Financial Economics student Lee Jia Ning; the silver medalists were Weng Keen, Master of Science students Ng Wei Pin and Tor Xin Yen, Accounting student Wang Zheng Hong, Electronic Engineering student Lim Wan Xiang, and Agricultural Science student Lee Ling Keing; and the bronze medalists were Ling Keing and Finance student Chua Chung Li.

The officer-in-charge for UTAR Wushu Club Lau Jean Moon enthused, “UTAR recognises sports and recreational activities as an imperative part of a well-balanced lifestyle and integral to a well-rounded collegiate experience. Hence, to inspire UTAR students to learn beyond the classroom, UTAR always encourages its students to participate in sports and extracurricular activities. This tournament is indeed an outstanding win for the winners and I hope they will continue to perform well in future competitions.”

One of the gold medalists, Soh said, “I joined this competition because I wanted to test my own level of competence in Wushu. I feel very happy and grateful to have won this competition. By joining the competition, I was able to master the martial arts skills even more. It is indeed a great experience for me.”

Another silver medalist Tor, commented, “I have never had any martial arts competition experience before. This competition is really an eye-opener and I’m glad that I could win a silver medal in this competition. This competition has taught me to be more strong-minded and tenacious.”

Last but not least, bronze medalist Ling Keing said, “I like to take part in competitions as I feel it’s a good opportunity for young players like me to watch and learn from other players. I am really happy and grateful. The result obtained reflects the effort and time I spent to prepare for this competition. Thank you UTAR for giving me this opportunity to compete in the championship.”
