Congratulations to Ir Professor Academician Dato’ Dr Chuah Hean Teik, President of Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR) for being awarded the FEIAP Engineer of the Year 2019. The Award was recently presented at the 5th FEIAP Convention Dinner and Award Night held in Xian, China on 29 June 2019.
The FEIAP Engineer of the Year Award by the Federation of Engineering Institutions of the Asia and the Pacific (FEIAP) was set up in 2008 to recognize an engineer who has the highest standard of ethics and conduct, and who has made a substantial contribution in the field of engineering benefiting the society as a whole. The work for the awardee shall be substantial with contribution for the advancement and development of the engineering profession in the Asia Pacific region, and/or the progress of scientific research in the field of engineering as judged by the quality of his or her publications and/or patents.
Professor Chuah is a well-recognised educator, researcher and technical leader. He is considered as a Who’s Who in the engineering profession in Malaysia, ASEAN, Asia and the Pacific. He has been in academia since 1986, and has held the post of a full Professor for the last 22 years. He was the founding Dean of Engineering in Multimedia University in Malaysia and has been the President of Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman in Malaysia since 2008. His research interest is in applied electromagnetics and microwave remote sensing. He has published more than 260 international journal and conference papers.
He has received many local and international recognition for his scholarly work and for his significant contributions to the engineering profession which included the 1990 Young Scientist Award at the 23rd General Assembly of the International Union of Radio Science (URSI) at Prague, Czechoslovakia; 1993 Young Scientist Award at the 24th General Assembly of URSI at Kyoto, Japan; 1995 Young Scientist Award (Industrial Sector) by the Malaysian Ministry of Science, Technology and the Environment; 1999 Malaysian Toray Science Foundation Science and Technology Award, 2011 IET Malaysia Outstanding Achievement Award; 2017 Outstanding Engineering Achievement Award by the ASEAN Federation of Engineering Organisations; the Fellow of IEEE USA, Senior Fellow of Academy of Sciences and ASEAN Academy of Engineering and Technology; and the most recent admission to the Engineering Hall of Fame by IEM in April 2019.
Professor Chuah is the current President of the ASEAN Academy of Engineering and Technology, and the past President of the Institution of Engineers Malaysia (2009-2011). He was the Vice President of FEIAP in 2007-2011 and President of FEIAP in 2011-2015. Since 2015, he has served as the Chairman of the Standing Committee on Engineering Education. Prof Chuah has been instrumental in establishing a platform for mutual recognition of engineering degree programmes in the Asia-Pacific region. He actively participated in drawing the FEIAP Engineering Education Guideline which was accepted at the General Assembly of FEIAP in Hanoi in Dec 2010. The Guideline provides a framework for the development of an engineering programme accreditation system that focuses on the delivery of assured graduate outcomes appropriate to a particular economy at a particular stage in development. It serves as a commonly acceptable minimum equivalence in engineering degree programmes in Asia and the Pacific region. The engineering programmes recognized by FEIAP will fulfill the entry academic requirement for registration as an APEC Engineer. The FEIAP Engineering Education has been acknowledged by the UNESCO Jakarta Office for Asia and the Pacific region in 2013, indicating the endorsement of the engineering guideline. He is also instrumental in establishing the FEIAP Engineering Education Guidelines for Engineering Technologists and Technicians which were approved by FEIAP in 2018.
Professor Chuah has been appointed as Mentor/Reviewer to help establish the Engineering Accreditation System for developing countries in ASEAN and Africa such as Myanmar, Cambodia, Nigeria, Rwanda and Pakistan. He has conducted tens of training courses on Outcome-based Education to academics, assessors and policy makers throughout Asia and the Pacific economies.
For his significant contributions to engineering education and engineering profession, FEIAP has awarded Professor Chuah the FEIAP Engineer of the Year 2019.
