Students win gold in table tennis

It was a superbly exciting moment for a team of six UTAR students when they were announced as the champion of XMUM Table Tennis Invitation Tournament 2019. The tournament was held from 22 to 23 June 2019 at the Badminton Court of Xiamen University Malaysia, Selangor.

The UTAR team of six players brought applause to the university by winning six gold medals and the overall champion title. Representing UTAR in this competition were Environmental, Occupational Safety and Health student Hang Zhong Yu, Business Administration student Evon Ho Yi Vern, Banking and Finance student Choong Kwai Mun, Foundation student Wong Yao Min, Logistics and International Shipping student Foo Wui Jia and Marketing student Tang Kian Wai.

XMUM Table Tennis Invitation Tournament 2019 is a national level table tennis tournament which is open to university students. Organised by the Table Tennis Club of Xiamen University Malaysia, the tournament saw a participation of 12 teams from various universities and colleges throughout peninsular Malaysia.

Among the participated universities and colleges were Multimedia University, UCSI University, Sunway University, HELP University, First City University College, Methodist College Kuala Lumpur, Xiamen University Malaysia and UTAR.

Aimed to develop the enthusiasm of young students towards table tennis, the tournament also aims to provide a platform for players to build good network with players from various institutes of higher learning. Among the categories that have been competed by UTAR players were Men’s Single, Men’s Double, Women’s Single, Women’s Double and Mix Double.

Hang enthused, “First of all, I would like to thank my teammates, the supporters and the officials for giving us the opportunity to take part in this competition. Through this tournament, I gained a lot of experiences and indeed it built my confidence. We did our best in this competition and we are proud to be the champion. This precious moment will certainly last forever.”

His sentiment was echoed by Ho and she said, “As this is my first competition in UTAR, I am proud that we were able to clinch a gold as a team. I did enjoy the competition with my teammates.”

On the other hand, Choong added, “You can retake a class but you can't relive a competition. I am proud to be one of the team members of UTAR table tennis. It was really an awesome experience to compete in this competition. I wish we could achieve greater success in the future.”

Another player Wong said, “I feel proud to become one of the members of UTAR table tennis team. Thank you to all the other teammates who struggled together to gain the victory.”

Foo was also glad to be part of the tournament and she enthused, “I am very grateful to be given this opportunity to participate in this tournament. Throughout this tournament, I came to the realisation that victory never comes through an easy way. Without the cooperation of teammates, the encouragement from supporters, good backing from team officers and a never give up mindsets, we would not have achieved this goal. I think it is just a good start for our table tennis team and we will keep the fighting spirit and meet more successes.”

Last but not least, Tang shared his experience and said, “I feel proud and pleased to be a team member of UTAR table tennis. During this tournament, I gained a lot of experiences and also enjoyed many memorable moments with my teammates. I will continue to work hard to improve myself and get ready for the next tournament.”

The team was led by Department of Student Affairs of Kampar Campus officers Adrin Yeap Wai Kuan and Lau Jean Moon.
