Academics from Faculty of Business and Finance, namely Centre for Business and Management Chairperson Assoc Prof Dr Lee Voon Hsien, Dr Garry Tan Wei Han, Dr Leong Lai Ying and Hew Jun Jie were recently awarded the “Top Downloaded Article 2019” by Technological Forecasting and Social Change (TFSC), Elsevier USA.

Based on the number of downloads in the last 90 days, the award-winning research is titled “The age of Mobile Social Commerce: An Artificial Neural Network Analysis on its Resistances”. Co-authored with UCSI University, Malaysia academic Prof Ooi Keng Boon, the research was motivated by the lack of information on mobile social media users’ resistance behaviours towards mobile social commerce. With the data collected from mobile social media users who have no experience in mobile social commerce, Artificial Neural Network analysis was engaged to capture both linear and nonlinear relationships in a research model that consists of innovation barriers and privacy concern.

“Getting published in TFSC is challenging (TFSC has an acceptance rate of 23%), not to mention to stand out as one of the most downloaded articles among all the published articles (there were about 300 articles published in 2017). TFSC is also recognised as a prestigious journal that is highly ranked by several professional bodies. In the Academic Journal Guide 2018 that is maintained by the Chartered Association of Business Schools, TFSC is rated as a Level 3 journal. This signifies that TFSC publishes only original and well-executed research papers and are highly regarded. TFSC is also respectively ranked by the Australian Business Deans Council and Clarivate Analytics as a ranked A and Quartile 1 journal. Therefore, we are grateful for receiving this award as it means that our research paper article is recognised at the international level, and we think such recognition is important for every researcher in career,” enthused the academics.

They added, “Apart from promoting research excellence to boost UTAR’s ranking, research excellence is also a good motivation for our students to take on a more active role in researching. With such recognition, students’ confidence towards their own research will increase, believing that they too are able to gain such achievements. Certainly, researching is also a good platform for students to enhance their analytical skills, and in a much advanced field, some students may find their strength in researching and hence develop solutions for certain world problems. Therefore, it is not only rewarding for us, but the recognition is equally rewarding to the students whom we nurture and care so much for.”
