Recognising the importance of visual media in effective scientific communication, the Centre for Foundation Studies (CFS) of Kampar Campus, in partnership with Beta Medik (M) Sdn Bhd, organised the inaugural Biology Specimen Drawing and Paper Dissection Competitions from 12 to 16 August 2019 at UTAR Kampar Campus.
An idea mooted by CFS Kampar Campus Director Tan Lee Siew, Department of Science and Engineering academics Chan Jer Jing and Ho Wai Yew, the competitions were inspired by the Nancy Rothwell Award held by the Royal Society of Biology.
Open to all FHSC1224 Introduction to Physiological Systems and FHSB1224 Biology II May 2019 trimester students, the Biology Specimen Drawing Competition received a total of 49 entries while the Paper Dissection Competition received 16.
“We realised that proficiency in arts and visual media offers scientists a competitive advantage as it enables them to communicate their findings more effectively to a broad audience,” said Tan. Meanwhile, Chan added, “A picture is worth more than a thousand words. Groundbreaking discoveries like DNA structure becomes instantaneously recognisable by people from all walks of life because of these powerful images.”
The judging panels consisted of CFS Department of Science and Engineering Head Ooi Siew Fong, Faculty of Science (FSc) senior lecturer Ng Wen Jie and FSc lecturer Alicia Ho Lai Yee. According to them, selecting the winning entries was a challenging task because each of the outcomes was really inspiring. “We were very impressed by the entries and it took us over three hours to select the best entries,” said Ooi.
For the Biology Specimen Drawing Competition, Tan Lee Ee emerged as the winner while Wong Sin May and Rayson Tan Yong Yit took home the second and third prizes respectively.
For the Paper Dissection Competition, Janice Poh Zi Yi and her team members, namely, Khoo Elyne, Khoo Yvonne, Tan Mei Xin, and Ung Kah Yeng were crowned as the winners. The second prize was won by Koh Wai Thean, Chai Kah Hui, Grace Lim and Lau Xiao En while the third prize was won by Tan Lee Ee, Chah Pei Yuan, Heng Chee Yang and Lim Chee Tung. The winners also walked away with a certificate each. Prizes and certificates were sponsored by Beta Medik (M) Sdn Bhd.
“We are grateful that CFS (Kampar) recognises the interdependence between arts and science. These competitions allowed us to showcase technicalities,” said Janice Poh.
