UTAR
Bachelor of Engineering (Hons) Mechanical Engineering student Low Xu Guang
was the Champion in the Solidworks Skills Competition 2019 (Central Region)
hosted by SolidWorks Malaysia - IME Authorized Reseller and IME Group of
Companies. Low walked away with
RM500, a trophy and a certificate as well as SOLIDWORKS Advanced Training
voucher worth RM3,200 and SOLIDWORKS Professional Certification Exam Voucher
worth RM1,800.
The competition required the participants
to use their imagination and analytical skills to invent, design and turn
ideas into products. The design work, however, must be completed using
SOLIDWORKS.
The objectives of the competition were to
create buzz and discover 3D modelling skills among students in Malaysia,
gather young and talented students to compete among themselves, deepen
students’ understanding and skills in industrial problem solving, promote
STEM skills in institutes of higher learning (IHL) and industry, and gain
experience for future career.
He said, “This competition is about
drawing a 3D model by referring to a 2D drawing and we compete for accuracy
and speed of completion. Previously, I participated in the Shell Eco
Marathon 2017 where I was assigned to draw parts for a vehicle. That event
gave me the exposure and experience needed for this competition. With that
experience, I managed to extend my drawing skills to a higher level.” He
continued, “The more you practice, the better you become. Also, seek advice
from supervisors that have a lot of experience and continue to learn from
each other.”
