UTAR won champion in 1st Hou Xue Cup National Mandarin
Debating Championship
A team of five UTAR students from UTAR Kampar Chinese Language Society Debate Club won Champion in the 1st Hou Xue Cup National Mandarin Debating Championship(第一届《后学杯》全国大专辩论赛). The competition was held from 20 February to 7 March 2021 via online platform.
The winning team consists of Bachelor of Science (Honours) Logistics and International Shipping student Kelly Chin Jia Hui, Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) Environmental Engineering students Koh Kar Weng and Ooi Che Khai, Bachelor of Science (Honours) Statistical Computing and Operations Research student Ng Jia Wen and Foundation Studies student See Tong Shin. Koh also won Best Debater award in the final round for his outstanding performance.
A total of 18 debate teams from 15 public and private universities throughout Malaysia participated in the competition. All teams spent nearly a month to prepare for the competition.
With the results of three victories and one defeat, the UTAR team successfully made it to the final round of the competition. UTAR team and the debate team from Universiti Malaysia Pahang (UMP) debated on the topic titled "Will 2021 be better or worse than 2020?" in the final round. UTAR team won the final round with 5.5 points to 3.5 points over the UMP team.
The team expressed their gratitude to their coaches and seniors for preparing them for the competition. They also look forward to participating in more debate competitions in the future.
The competition was organised by Debater Dream (辩手梦), a well-known debate education Facebook page that shares information on debate and provides debate teaching materials.
