Unique architecture designs bag prizes at the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area: ASEAN International Colleges Bamboo Design and Construction Competition

Two teams of Architecture students from the Department of Architecture and Sustainable Design (DASD) in the UTAR Lee Kong Chian Faculty of Engineering and Science (LKC FES) bagged several impressive wins at the International level of the 2021 Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area: ASEAN International Colleges Bamboo Design and Construction Competition.

These two teams emerged as the Champion and the First Runner-up in the Malaysian national final round of the competition.

The international level of the competition saw the participation of 17 universities from Guangdong, Hong Kong, Macao and ASEAN countries. The universities include Chiang Mai University and  Rajamangala University of Technology Lanna from Thailand; Universitas Tanjungpura amd Udayana University from Indonesia; Universiti Sains Malaysia, Politeknik Ungku Omar, and UTAR from Malaysia; City University of Hong Kong; University of Saint Joseph from Macao; South China University of Technology, Foshan University, Shenzhen University, and China Academy of Art, from China.


The Blossoming Motif architecture design won Second place in the overall competition championship and First place in Engineering & Structural Design category

The first team from UTAR won Second place in the overall competition championship and First place in the Engineering & Structural Design category. The team consisted of Architecture students Wong Puy Yan, Boon Jing Jack, Oo Zhi Ling, Chan Qi Wei and Chin Mann Yuin. Their design was titled The Blossoming Motif. They were supervised by Department of Architecture and Sustainable Design (DASD) Specialist I Ar Loh Khang Yong. The team walked away with RMB 5,000 prize money, a trophy and certificates. They also received RMB 2,000 and a certificate for their First place win in the Engineering & Structural Design category. Overall, they won RMB 7,000. 

 

The Golden Wings architecture design won Second place in the the overall competition championship, First place in Comprehensive Expression category,  and Second place in Engineering & Structural Design category

The second team from UTAR also won Second place in the overall competition championship. In addition, they won First place in the Comprehensive Expression category and Second place in the Engineering & Structural Design category. Their architecture design titled Golden Wings was supervised by LKC FES DASD Specialist I Abd Muluk bin Abd Manan. The team members were Chor Zhao Gen, Lim Chen Hee, Amelia Low Chuan Yin, Cheong Li bin and Ng Chee Xin. They walked away with RMB 5,000 prize money, a trophy and certificates. They also took home RMB 2,000, a certificate, as well as a bonus of RMB 1,500, for their First place win in the Comprehensive Expression category and Second place win in the Engineering & Structural Design category. They won a total of RMB 8,500.

The final judging of the international level competition commenced in the first week of December and winners were announced on 12 December 2021.  The finalists of the construction competition built their projects in Nansha Bird Park, Guangzhou, China and at  the 29th Guangzhou Garden Expo Ground - Haixinsha Square.

Themed 源于传统技艺 Bamboo Art Space inspired by Traditional Arts & Craft, the competition aimed to find a prototype design derived from traditional techniques and developed or transformed  into an innovative design to form a bamboo art space. The competition was designed to exercise the hands-on ability of students in architecture and encourage them to build facilities in real life with original materials and size, which will improve the practical experience of 1:1 scaling bamboo constructions.

At the international level, the overall awards and individual awards were selected according to  three outlooks in the scoring rules. The first outlook is the architectural design where 50% is allocated for conceptual innovation and design integration. The second outlook is the engineering and structural design where 30% is allocated for structural innovation and structural details. The last outlook is communication and promotion where 20% is awarded for the clarity of the visual presentation including graphics and animation.

The 2021 Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area: ASEAN International Colleges Bamboo Design and Construction Competition is an academic competition jointly sponsored by the South China University of Technology and Guangzhou Nansha Bird Park. The annual construction competition is committed to strengthening the exchange of innovative and creative talents among universities in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area and the ASEAN international region, exploring new forms of innovative and creative cooperation between Guangdong, Hong Kong, Macao and ASEAN, and building an international academic platform for innovation and creativity with world influence.
