UTAR Service Robot won 3rd Place at RoboCup@Home Education Online Challenge 2021

UTAR Service Robot by UTAR Lee Kong Chian Faculty of Engineering and Science (LKC FES) team won 3rd Place at the RoboCup@Home Education Online Challenge 2021.

The team, which was comprised of five members, namely Yong Cherng Liin, Chong Kah Yoon, Cheong Wy Joe, Chung Pu Onn, and Kok Siong Yuan, won 3rd place in the Open Platform for Open Category for their UTAR Service Robot. The team was advised by Ir Danny Ng Wee Kiat.

The UTAR Robot Service is a platform that was developed by the team over the past three years to serve as a development platform for service robots. The robot is equipped with LIDAR, depth camera and IMU to sense the environment. The robot is able to conduct simultaneous localisation and mapping (SLAM) and navigate autonomously in any indoor environment. Moreover, it is also capable of using speech and object recognition through the use of AI.

In the Open Platform category, participants were required to use custom build robots for the challenge events. The challenge’s development focus was on both hardware and software designs.

With global participation from various economies, including the USA, China, India, Spain, Macau, Malaysia, India, Thailand and Mexico, the RoboCup@Home Education Online Challenge 2021 aimed to promote learning at home amid the current global pandemic situation. The event includes a series of robot building short courses for beginners via online classroom, technical awards challenge and live streaming of remote participation online challenge.
