Mechanical Engineering student wins Solidworks Design Challenge

Lim won the Solidworks Design challenge with his project “Helicopter”

Mechanical Engineering student Lim Zi Mo walked away with the grand prize at the Solidworks Design Challenge. He won against 15 other contestants with his project “Helicopter” and was awarded the Jabra Elite 75T True Wireless Earbuds.

The contest, which was organised by 3D design solutions provider—Dassault Systèmes SolidWorks, was open to SolidWorks users and students who are located in Malaysia and Australia. The theme of the contest was ‘The Toys We Never Had’.

The submissions were evaluated by SolidWorks judges with the weightage of 70% and by public votes (30%) during the online voting period, starting from 16 November 2020 to 31 January 2021. The judges evaluated the participant’s ability to build an assembly using SolidWorks software and based on how creative and original the participant conveys the theme of the contest, as well as the aesthetic qualities demonstrated in the entry.

Lim participated in the competition on his own initiative. Without the guidance of a mentor, he managed to win the contest. “It feels surprising and unbelievable to be the winner of this contest,” he said. He added that his childhood memory gave him the idea for his project “Helicopter”.

“It was challenging for me to prepare the project with 60 plus components in only three weeks,” he said. Although Lim faced challenges throughout the contest, he put in the necessary work and tried his best to win the contest.

Lim said persistence, patience and the ability to think out-of-the-box are the valuable lessons he learned throughout the competition. He is now looking for more competitions to participate in future.
