1196 UTAR students received scholarships for October 2021 intake

A total of 1196 students were awarded UTAR scholarships at the UTAR Scholarship Presentation e-Ceremony for October 2021 intake on 13 November 2021. The e-ceremony was hosted on Microsoft Teams. The scholarship recipients were students from the October 2021 intake enrolled in UTAR Foundation and undergraduate programmes.

At the e-ceremony were UTAR President Ir Prof Dr Ewe Hong Tat, UTAR Vice President for Student Development and Alumni Relations Prof Dr Choong Chee Keong, Division of Examinations, Awards and Scholarships Acting Director Lau Siew Yung, scholarship recipients and UTAR staff.

 

Prof Ewe congratulated the recipients

Prof Ewe congratulated the recipients and said, “UTAR has been receiving support and contributions from the community. In return, the University has been providing scholarships and loans to students in need. As of 2021, over RM114 million internal scholarships and over RM10 million internal loans have been awarded to UTAR students.”

He added, “UTAR will continue to provide financial assistance to students in need in order for them to continue their studies at the University and to obtain a valuable degree for a brighter future. The University is also able to continue its sustainability initiative of ensuring deserving students receive quality education and lifelong learning opportunities with the financial assistance provided. Thus, do stay focused on getting good grades and do your best in your university studies. We hope that after you graduate, you will make a positive contribution to society and the workplace, as well as give back to the community with a charitable heart, especially to those in need.”

Also invited to talk about their own educational experience and advise the scholarship recipients were UTAR alumni Ng Tze Way and Phang Hui Ling, previous scholarship recipients.

Ng, who is a former student of the Lee Kong Chian Faculty of Engineering and Science (LKCFES) said, “I was awarded a 100% Tuition Fee Scholarship by UTAR.  IIt has helped me by relieving the burden of paying the tuition fees and enabled me to just focus on my studies. I felt honoured and grateful to be one of the recipients of the scholarship which has motivated me to maintain good grades in my studies.”

Phang, a former student of the Faculty of Business and Finance (FBF), shared, “I come from an ordinary family that earns an average salary, and both my parents are blue collar workers. Hence, I deeply appreciate UTAR for awarding me scholarship for my degree studies which helped to ease my parents’ financial burden. I look forward to helping those in need as well as give back to society.”

Foundation students Lim and Lee expressing their gratitude

Foundation student Lim Jing Jie said, “I am now studying Foundation in Science leading to electronic engineering in UTAR. My father is a carpenter and my mother is a housewife. My younger brother is in secondary school and sister is in primary school. I am sincerely honoured to be chosen as the recipient of a 100% scholarship by UTAR. This scholarship will definitely help to lessen my financial worries and allow me to focus on my studies. After joining UTAR, I found that all the lecturers and tutors here are very good and teach the students very responsibly until everyone understands. I am grateful to them.”

Another foundation student Lee Yung Shen said, “I come from a humble background and I am honoured to have been selected as one of the scholarship recipients. Thanks to this scholarship, I am able to concentrate more on my studies and not work. Furthermore, it does lessen the financial burden of my parents. Upon joining UTAR, I found out that it provides an excellent learning environment, which plays a fundamental role in producing holistic students. Hence, students who graduate from UTAR often have enjoy high employability rate.”

 

Undergraduate students Ong and Angeline Law expressed their gratitude

Faculty of Science (FSc) student Ong Kai Sin said, “It was a great pleasure for me to be awarded a full scholarship. I come from a normal family; my father is a fisherman and my mother is a housewife. This financial assistance you provided will be of great help to me in paying my educational expenses and lessening the burden of my family. I have always dreamed of becoming a chemist. So I am grateful to UTAR for providing me with a conducive environment to achieve my goal.”

Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences (FMHS) Physiotherapy student Angeline Law Ann Chi shared, “I was very excited to receive my scholarship because it did not only cover my tuition fees but also provide some pocket money to participate in the various activities/training we have in UTAR. The real value of this scholarship lies beyond the monetary sum that we are receiving. It leads us towards the opportunities for exposure and the experience that we can get over the next 4 years. I am looking forward to beginning a colourful journey at UTAR. I encourage all of you to dedicate the best version of yourself and enjoy the new experiences you can get in UTAR.”

The virtual ceremony ended with a group photo session. UTAR congratulates all the scholarship recipients and wishes them a truly educational experience in the University.
