Two UTAR Lee Kong Chian Faculty of Engineering and Science students, Cham Ting Hong and Chong Boon Yoong, recently obtained the Huawei Certified ICT Associate (HCIA) Artificial Intelligence (AI) Certification after successfully passing the Huawei certification exam. The HCIA AI is a course launched by Huawei, Chongqing University of Posts and Telecommunications and the Dalian University of Technology. The HCIA AI certificate is awarded to engineers who can install, configure and run ICT devices, and rectify faults in a technical field.

Reflecting on his effort, Cham said, “One needs to have a strong interest in AI and an eagerness to learn. Since it involves a lot of self-studying, time management is also a key to gaining this achievement. Also, to have a better understanding of the course, I made my own notes and conducted plenty of online research.” Meanwhile, Chong also emphasised on a similar approach. Besides constantly attending the HCIA AI online courses to learn more, he also attempted mock examinations to familiarise himself with the questions.

The two students found out about the certification through different means. Chong learned about the certification through the Life-long Learning Briefing for Integrated Design Project (IDP), while Cham found out through his lecturer Ir Ts Dr Tham Mau Luen.

Cham mentioned, “I decided to join because I have a strong interest in AI and I am currently working on an AI-related project. I felt that my participation in the HCIA would provide me a good chance to learn more about AI and broaden my horizons.”

Cham and Chong were both glad to have received the certification, as they expressed their happiness and gratitude towards Dr Tham for granting them the opportunity. “I am happy and surprised at the same time after obtaining the certification because this is my first time participating in an external course. It was quite challenging; I tried my best in the exam and I am happy with the result. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Dr Tham for providing me this opportunity,” said Cham.

Dr Tham explained, “As one of the lecturers for the subject “Integrated Design Project”, I was aware that the HCIA AI Certification was offered to the students to learn hands-on skills related to AI. This was important for the students to practise solving real-world engineering problems. During my weekly project discussion with the students, I taught them using the teaching materials from the HCIA-AI. This includes the TensorFlow overview and the basic programming for image recognition.” He added, “I am very proud of my students for passing the exam. Obtaining the HCIA AI Certification is not an easy feat, as it requires students to have extensive knowledge of python programming basics, essential mathematics knowledge and pre-knowledge for Deep Learning. I believe that students now have the ability to design, develop, and innovate AI products and solutions using technologies such as AI, machine learning, and deep learning. Thus, I would like to thank Huawei for sponsoring the exam vouchers for the two students.”
