M. Kandiah Faculty of Medicine and
Health Sciences (MK FMHS) lecturer Dr Wong Jun Leong, MK FMHS Bachelor of
Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery student Lee Yan Kien and Min Rou Woon from
Universiti Teknologi Malaysia won the Digital Art Award at the SEAOHUN 2022
Regional Student Competition: Art to Communicate Antimicrobial Resistance
(AMR) on 18 – 24 November 2022 under the Digital Art category. The team won
USD200 and an e-certificate award each.
The team, known as YK&MR, said,
“Many people do not understand how to correctly utilise antibiotics. People
believe that antibiotics are the same as other regular medications. They
will discontinue the medicine after they have recovered. Germs that have not
been completely eradicated develop resistance to the antibiotic. As a
result, it will be resistant to the antibiotic. To combat the evolved germs,
new and stronger antibiotics must be utilised. If individuals continue to
use antibiotics in this manner, bacteria will develop resistance to various
medicines. This is a process called antimicrobial resistance. No antibiotics
will thereafter be able to destroy the germs in a single day. When creating
this artwork, we considered the possibility that not everyone has a
background in a biology-related field. Therefore, we made this artwork with
the intention for it to be easily understandable in just a single glance.”
They added, “This artwork intends
to raise awareness and educate the public on the proper usage of
antibiotics. When advanced bacteria proliferate in a patient’s body, he or
she will become unwell again if the antibiotics are not finished. If the
patient finishes the antibiotics, the germs can completely be eradicated,
and the patient can recover completely. In conclusion, people must finish
the antibiotics prescribed by doctors, whether or not they recover.”
