UTAR Lee Kong Chian Faculty of Engineering and Science (LKC FES) Master of Engineering Science student Liew Son Qian was awarded the Best Presenter Award at the International Conference on Sustainable Renewable & Energy Efficiency (ICSREE) 2022, which took place from 7 to 8 November 2022 at Bangi Resort Hotel Malaysia.
Liew’s research was titled “Comprehensive Modelling for Analyzing the Power Conversion Efficiency of Polycrystalline Silicon Photovoltaic Device under Indoor Operating Conditions”. His research aimed to predict the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of organic solar cell devices.
ICSREE 2022 is a professional conference in energy led by Solar Energy Research Institute (SERI), Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia. Aligned with SDG 7— Affordable and clean energy, the event aimed to foster associations between institutions involved in both national and international energy research.
Out of the 44 presenters at the international conference, Liew along with a few other researchers were selected for the award.
“In this study, the performance modelling has been executed based on the comprehensive method proposed by LKC FES academic Prof Dr Chong Kok Keong and others,” explained Liew. “From the measurement outcomes, the spectrum of LED illumination has been collated with that of AM1.5G, in which the LED denotes a comparatively narrow band with significant peaks at 450 and 560 nm. In addition, the conceptual model has been successfully verified by comparing the simulated PCE and the measured PCE at reasonable deviations in the range of 3.0 – 23.3 per cent,” Liew added. Liew was supervised by LKC FES academics Prof Dr Chong Kok Keong and Dr Ng Chai Yan.
He shared, “To be honest, it was not an easy journey; in fact, it was challenging. From the outset, Prof Chong encouraged me to participate in the conference and up until the actual day, a lot of work has been done. Nevertheless, I was not alone, I had my supervisors who consistently motivated and supported me. Be nice, humble, and gracious; it will take you far.” He added, “UTAR has played a part in my achievement by providing me with quality education and a conducive research environment.”
“The conference was surely advantageous for the participants in terms of observing progress, boosting research methodology, reporting findings, enhancing writing and communication skills, and exposing them to the new networking partners,” he finally added.
The event was sponsored by the University of Nottingham, UK. A special workshop titled “Innovation in sustainable cooling technology” was also held with the support of the British Council, the Malaysian Industry-Government Group for High Technology (MIGHT) and the Royal Society.
