Second runner-up in Outstanding Entrepreneurship Mentor Award at MEA 2021

Dr Wong Whee Yen, Head of Master of Information Systems Programme from UTAR Lee Kong Chian Faculty of Engineering and Science (LKC FES), was awarded the second runner-up in Category D: Outstanding Entrepreneurship Mentor Award at the Entrepreneurial Awards 2021 (MEA 2021), organised by the Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE).

MEA is the Ministry of Higher Education’s highest recognition for the higher education institutions (HEIs), teaching staff, mentors, students, and graduates to strengthen the entrepreneurial agenda in HEIs and to foster entrepreneurial spirit. It gives recognition to HEIs that show excellence in promoting entrepreneurship education as well as entrepreneurship development at HEIs.

This year, the award attracted 133 entries from public universities, private HEIs, polytechnics and community colleges. It consisted of five categories, namely Institutional Awards; Outstanding Student Enterprise Award; Outstanding Graduate Enterprise Award; Outstanding Entrepreneurship Mentor Award and Outstanding Student Social Entrepreneurship Award.

Dr Wong received RM3,000 as the second runner-up in Category D: Outstanding Entrepreneurship Mentor Award. In addition, UTAR entered the Top 11 finalists for Category A: Institutional Award.

The award ceremony was held on 21 December 2021 at Putrajaya Marriott Hotel's Grand Ballroom. Also present at the event on behalf of UTAR were Vice President for R&D and Commercialisation Prof Ts Dr Faidz bin Abd Rahman, LKC FES Dean Ir Prof Dr Goi Bok Min, LKC FES Deputy Dean for Academic Development and Undergraduate Programmes Assoc Prof Ir Dr Gobi Vetharatnam, and Software Engineering student Jayden Sue Jun Hong.

The submission of the award nomination was coordinated by Unovate Centre. Since the establishment of Unovate Centre in 2020, UTAR has started to explore more business and learning opportunities in digital entrepreneurship. The University has collaborated with industry partners such as Alibaba, BizPorter, Yayasan KRU and many more to develop future generations with digital entrepreneurship skills through active involvement in the areas such as digital marketing, e-commerce, and fulfilment centre services. All these activities are consolidated under Unovate Unipreneur STEP Cultivation Programme.

UTAR is one of the few private universities that has a complete e-commerce ecosystem on campus that fulfils the process of sourcing the products, branding and marketing, labelling and storage, reaching out to consumers online, handling online payments, packaging and delivering the products to consumers; all completed on campus with the assistance of students to enable them to be trained and proficient in e-commerce.
