Lee Kong Chian Faculty of Engineering & Science (LKC FES) students, namely Wong Yi Jie, Wee Lian Jie and Lim Yueh Sheng were qualified for the final stage of the international category of Rohde & Schwarz Engineering Competition 2022. The final competition will be held on 24 and 25 May 2022 via online. In addition, the team named IRIS will also receive a gift package from Rohde & Schwarz.

Themed Machine Learning in Microwave Imaging to detect deviations in tablet blisters, the competition aimed to cultivate the participants to develop a smart algorithm to detect, localise and classify the present and missing pills in the tablet blisters.

Highlighting their project titled Detect the Difference, IRIS said, “Microwave Imaging is useful in detecting defects in the production lines due to its characteristic of being able to see through the packaging. In the competition, our task was to detect and localise the missing pills in tablet blisters.”

Speaking of being qualified for the final stage, IRIS added, “The competition provided us with the microwave images of tablet blisters, where we had to train our deep learning model to detect the coordinates of every pill in the packaging and classify whether the pills were present or missing. Moreover, we joined the competition because we wanted to take up the challenge of designing a real-life application of the deep learning technology model. This competition provided us with insights on how well we can perform with respect to engineering students around the world.”

They added, “Besides, we are thrilled and grateful to present our project in the final phase of the international engineering competition. And, it is rewarding to see our skills learnt throughout our four years managed to bring us to the final stage.”

For more than 16 years Rohde & Schwarz has hosted its international student competition with over 2,300 participants from all over the world. Also, the Rohde & Schwarz technology group develops, produces and markets a wide range of electronic capital goods.
