A team comprising UTAR academics and students from different faculties were awarded a gold medal for their project titled “Digital Interactive Technology in Medical Science Education – Gamification Level 1” at the 7th Annual Edition of the International Invention Innovation Competition in Canada (iCAN 2022) on 27 August 2022.

The award-winning project was a cross-disciplinary project by Centre for Immersive Technology and Creativity Chairperson Dr Aloysius Yapp; Faculty of Creative Industries (FCI) lecturer Lim Chai Kim; FCI Bachelor of Arts (Honours) Game Design students Teh Kheng Yee and Chen Fun Sheng; M. Kandiah Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences (MK FMHS) Clinical Assoc Prof Dr Thaw Zin and lecturer Dr Avneet Kaur; MK FMHS Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (M.B.B.S) students Kang Shu Ting and Alicia Ho Pei Shan. It was supported by MK FMHS Senior Prof Dr Ngeow Yun Fong, MK FMHS Clinical Assoc Prof Dr Mohammed Abdulrazzaq Jabbar and Faculty of Accountancy and Management Deputy Dean for R&D and Postgraduate Programmes Dr Pok Wei Fong.

Aside from the gold medal, the team also received the certification of Diploma and Canadian Special Award of Excellence in recognition of their project. Their project aimed to serve as a platform for teaching and learning medical ethics besides delving into a broader social dialogue on the implications of new technologies for privacy, autonomy and liberty. The project is anticipated to promote knowledge and reflection on the aspect of practical and moral dimensions of different areas of the medical curriculum.

Tan said, “I gained experience, and learned various skills and knowledge that were not taught in the classroom. I believe this is important because it will help me stay ahead in the current competitive world. Fortunately, we were given adequate learning materials to learn to program. It was very useful for amateurs like us, who are new to programming. Aside from that, the pre-requisite skills taught in the university served as a strong foundation for us to advance further to win this competition.”

Chen said, “I think teamwork is crucial because it enables team members to work together towards a shared goal and push one another to be more creative, productive and motivated. I strongly recommend students join more competitions like this to acquire soft skills which will benefit their future careers.”

Assoc Prof Dr Thaw Zin expressed his appreciation to the team members for their effort and to the Institute of Postgraduate Studies and Research for its support in winning the competition.

“This is our first cross-disciplinary project with MK FMHS and we would like to thank Assoc Prof Dr Thaw Zin for inviting us to join the project.,” said Lim and Dr Aloysius Yapp.

Organised by the Toronto International Society of Innovation & Advanced Skills (TISIAS) and supported by the Innovation Initiative Co-operative Inc., International Federation of Inventors’ Associations (IFIA) and World Invention Intellectual Property Associations (WIIPA), iCAN 2022 served as a special platform to unite the creativity and innovation initiatives of Canadian inventors with the rest of the world by providing everyone with the golden opportunity to expand their international network and business activities, and promote their inventions, new products and research projects while also providing them with a platform to achieve new milestones of success by winning iCAN Awards from Canada.
