LKC FES academic wins Young Scientist Award for his works on palm oil research

Lee Kong Chian Faculty of Engineering and Science (LKC FES) Centre for Photonics and Advanced Materials Research Chairperson Dr Steven Lim was selected as the winner of the 2022 Tan Sri Emeritus Professor Augustine S H Ong International Special Award on Inventions and Innovation in Palm Oil under the Young Scientist Award category at the Oils and Fats International Congress 2022 (OFIC 2022), held from 18 – 19 October 2022. The award was presented by the Malaysian Oil Scientists’ & Technologists’ Association (MOSTA) on 18 October 2022 at Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre.

Organised by MOSTA, OFIC 2022 aimed to provide a platform for sharing the latest research findings related to oils and fats in line with its theme ‘Boosting the Potential of Oil Palm and Its Products’. The event, which also included a poster session, enabled presenters to share their research findings and innovations to obtain feedback through interaction with international audiences.

Dr Steven Lim said, “I was actually nominated for this award by the faculty, considering the vast amount of research works I have completed, relating to the oil palm industry. I have also championed the sustainable transformation in our country’s palm oil industry, especially for better utilisation of oil palm waste into added value products. Not only that, I have been working closely with people in the industry to provide technical solutions to solve the industry’s energy and waste management issues.”

Reflecting on the honorary award, Dr Steven Lim said, “I feel delighted and surprised at winning this award, as it was quite a tough competition with many strong contenders from all over Malaysia. I truly appreciate MOSTA for recognising my passion and research work done in the oil palm industry.”

UTAR congratulates Dr Steven Lim for this amazing achievement.
