LKC FES student named Country Award Winner at Intel AI Global Impact Festival 2022

UTAR Lee Kong Chian Faculty of Engineering and Science (LKC FES) student Ho Wei Liang was recently announced as the Country Award Winner for Malaysia at the Intel® AI Global Impact Festival 2022 under the AI Impact Creators Category – Ages 18+: Students with AI Projects. He received the award for his project titled “Fire Detection and Monitoring System using Federated Learning Approach”.

Organised by Intel, the Intel® AI Global Impact Festival 2022 is an annual competition which allows the next generation technologists, teachers and academia, ecosystem and government partners to showcase AI innovation and impact. The competition was first launched in 2021, and it has continued in 2022 from 1 to 30 September under the theme Enriching Lives with AI Innovation. The award ceremony took place online on 21 October 2022.

Ho said, “I received a special invitation to join the festival and was nominated as one of the Global Nominations/Finalists since I achieved first place under the AI Impact Creator (over 18s) category at the 2022 Intel Building Digital Readiness Program before this.”

Ho also shared his feelings about being announced as the Country Award Winner for Malaysia, stating, “There were a lot of strong contenders among the top 220 AI Projects in the AI Global Impact Festival, with contestants all around the world from countries such as the USA, Canada, Japan, Singapore and many more. In order to properly select the global and country winners, as well as the country recognition awards, there were also several rounds of intense interviews with twelve panellists. I feel extremely honoured to have won the title of Country Award Winner in this prestigious competition.”

UTAR extends its heartfelt congratulations to Ho for his wonderful achievement.
