In the ninth annual U.S. News & World Report Best Global Universities Rankings 2022-2023, UTAR is ranked #716 in Best Global Universities in Asia, ranked #1835 among Best Global Universities, and ranked #13 in Best Global Universities in Malaysia. In the field of Engineering, UTAR is ranked #889 among Best Global Universities.

This annual U.S. News & World Report Best Global Universities rankings provide information on how universities compare globally and assist international students to select and compare institutions around the world before enrolling for studies. The Best Global Universities rankings focus specifically on the educational institutions’ academic research and reputation overall.

The overall Best Global Universities rankings encompass 2,000 top institutions from across 95 countries. These rankings are powered by Clarivate,™ and the institutions are selected from a pool of 2,011 universities.

To create the pool of 2,011 institutions, U.S. News first included the top 250 universities in the results of Clarivate's global reputation survey. Next, U.S. News added other institutions which meet the minimum threshold of at least 1,250 papers published between 2016 and 2020. Those two criteria created the final 2022-2023 ranking pool of 2,011 institutions from which the top-scoring 2,000 universities are selected by U.S. News in the overall ranking.

The rankings are calculated using the 13 indicators and weights that U.S. News chose to measure global research performance.

In addition, the 2,011 universities received a numerical rank for all 13 ranking indicators – such as publications, total citations and global research reputation based on their scores. The highest-scoring university for each of the 13 indicators received a rank of 1, and the lowest-scoring university – except for regional research reputation – received a rank of 2,011. Ties were allowed.

The data and metrics used in the rankings were provided by Clarivate. The bibliometric data was based upon the Web of Science.

Papers are limited to those published between 2016 and 2020. However, the citations to those papers come from all publications up to the most recent data available. For the 2022-2023 edition of the Best Global Universities, published on 25 October 2022, the cut-off was 29 May 29, 2022, with an InCites™ publication of June 28, 2022.

The U.S. News Best Global Universities also produced rankings by region, using the US definition of geographical regions. Those regions are Africa, Asia, Australia/New Zealand, Europe and Latin America. The regional research reputation numerical ranking indicator is calculated based on the schools within each of the six U.N. regions. This means the regional reputation numerical ranking indicator has six No. 1 educational institutions – one for each region in the overall ranking.

The Best Global Universities rankings also evaluate nearly 50 subject areas. UTAR is ranked # 889 in Engineering with the following world ranking details:
