Bachelor of Science (Honours) Software Engineering student Eyu Jer Min was awarded the Kahuna Award for best presenter and the Most Supportive Participant Award at the Huawei Asia-Pacific Seeds for the Future 2022 programme, outperforming 58 other participants. The programme was organised by Huawei, in collaboration with the Ministry of Education from 18 to 28 August 2022 in Thailand.

Eyu also received a certificate, Huawei earbuds worth RM129 for the Kahuna Award and a Huawei Sound Joy Speaker worth RM699 for the Most Supportive Participant Award. Her team, C5, was also the top 24 teams to pass the first round of the pitch and was the top 12 teams to be selected for the second round of the pitch.

Eyu enthused, “It was a humbling experience for me. The 10-day programme was a platform to inform the world of Huawei’s effort in pacing up with 5G, AI, Cloud Computing and Metaverse, aligning with the Sustainable Development Goals. Sailing into the unknown with 13 strangers was nerve-wracking, and competing with 24 teams from 16 different regions was challenging. However, our Malaysia Team managed to secure the top 12 teams in the Tech4Good pitching. I am very grateful to have won the Kahuna Award as the presenter of Team C5 and Most Supportive Participant Award in Class B. Thanks to all my friends and group mates who cheered me up. I certainly love the journey, love the people I met, love the stories and moments we had. Thanks to Annabelle Low and Nicholas Hathaway for being our mentors, and thanks to Huawei and ASEAN Foundation for the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.”

She also added, “The Tech4Good Competition focused a lot on ideation and pitching. I am glad that UTAR had prepared me in the skill of building the business model and relating the problems to solutions in a project. Moreover, with the coding skillset that UTAR has equipped me with, I can think both like the user and the technician at the same time to nourish the project.”

The Revilio app

The team created an app, named “Relivio”, which is a mental health supporting app. The app serves as a mental health support system which collaborates with celebrities, AI analysis, and smart wearable integration to assist suicidal youth. This app was created because of the rising number of suicide cases among youth, and their lack of knowledge on ways to seek help. The app is also in line with Sustainable Development Goal 3: Good Health and Well-being because the app aims to (1) reduce by one-third of premature mortality from non-communicable diseases through prevention, treatment, and promotion of mental and well-being; (2) strengthen the prevention and treatment of substance abuse including narcotic drug abuse and harmful use of alcohol; and (3) achieve universal health coverage including financial risk protection, access to quality essential health-care services and access to safe, effective, quality and affordable essential medicines and vaccines for all.

Seeds for the Future is Huawei’s global flagship CSR programme dedicated to STEM and non–STEM students worldwide. The programme also offers an opportunity for students to develop their leadership skills and cross-cultural competence through strategic management and traditional cultural lectures and events, while exploring Huawei’s cutting-edge ICT and experiencing multi-cultural communication, which would help to hone their professional development. So far, the programme has provided training opportunities for more than 12,000 youths worldwide to enrich their skill-set and pursue their aspiration.
