LKC FES students bag awards at IMechE

It was another proud moment for UTAR Lee Kong Chian Faculty of Engineering and Science (LKC FES) when its students won several awards at the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) 2022.

The trio from the Department of Mechanical Engineers, namely Lau Hao Yu, Er Ji Siang and Lee Jia Yee were awarded The Institution Project Award, The Frederic Barnes Waldron “Best StudentAward and The Institution Best Student Award respectively.

Lau, the winner of The Institution Project Award walked away with a Bronze medal and a certificate for his project titled “Hybrid Flexible Solar Cell and Cellulose-Based Electric Double Layer Capacitor (EDLC) for Wearable Device Application”. He was supervised by Assoc Prof Ts Dr Jun Hieng Kiat from the Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering in LKC FES.

The winner of The Frederic Barners Waldron “Best Student” Award Er walked away with a Bronze medal and a certificate. Er, who is also the chairperson of IMechE UTAR Student Chapter 2021-2022, has actively involved in community services. He also did not miss the opportunity to join beyond-the-border experiences through an online student exchange programme in China amidst the worldwide lockdown. Being multilingual, he has an excellent command of more than five languages, namely Mandarin, English, Malay, Tamil and Korean.

Last but not the least, the winner of The Institution Best Student Award Lee walked away with a certificate. Lee obtained an outstanding CGPA among her graduating batch with a first-class honour in her final year results. Besides maintaining excellent results, she has also been active in extra-curricular activities; she had organised multiple events and held various leadership roles since her freshman year (2018 - 2022). She has served at UTAR IMechE events despite the nationwide COVID-19 pandemic. She is also the winner of the Alibaba GDT Global Challenge 2021 and Greatech Award for Innovative Excellence 2021.

The IMechE provides life-long learning opportunities for the participants to meet, exchange ideas and innovate.  Besides providing a platform for participants to develop their skills throughout their careers, IMechE also helps them to contribute to some of the most outstanding developments in mechanical engineering. These awards are given annually by the Institution to students who are studying Mechanical Engineering as their first degree.
