Apart from the efficiency of
production, energy efficiency and carbon emission reduction are also
important key performance indexes in Environmental, Social and corporate
Governance (ESG). Intense energy consumption and strong dependence on fossil
fuels are the largest sources of anthropogenic emissions linked to climate
impacts. Now, the world’s most urgent mission is to respond to worsening
global climate change and towards achieving carbon neutrality by 2050. With
the escalating fuel price, the industry has faced many challenges regarding
the improvement of the energy efficiency of its processes and adoption of
the renewable energy to reduce the carbon footprint.
In addressing this matter, a team
of academics from Lee Kong Chian Faculty of Engineering and Science, namely
Assoc Prof Ir Ts Dr Bernard Saw Lip Huat, Ts Dr Yeo Wei Hong, Assoc Prof Ir
Dr Chua Kein Huat, Assoc Prof Ir Ts Dr Yew Ming Chian and Dr Rubina Bahar
secured a research grant from PMB Aluminium Sdn Bhd
for their project titled “Evaluating the energy efficiency and carbon
footprint in the aluminium production plant”.
Their research project aimed to
establish a framework to evaluate overall energy consumption to support the
implementation of appropriate energy efficiency measures. It is important to
enhance economic competitiveness and reduce environmental impacts without
affecting the quality of the products required in the industry. Through this
industry-academia collaboration, the team strives to minimise carbon
footprint, grow sustainably and mould a better future for generations to
come.
The team said, “We are aiming to
develop strong collaboration with the local industries and work together to
improve the overall energy efficiency of the plant and reduce the carbon
footprint to achieve the carbon neutrality goal in 2050.”
