Lee Kong Chian Faculty of Engineering & Science (LKC FES) Master of Engineering Science student Chai Yi Ding was awarded a certificate of achievement in recognition of outstanding accomplishment as a Selected Paper Presenter for the 6th IEM Research Paper Competition 2021 under the postgraduate category. The certificate was presented at the 19th Asian Pacific Confederation of Chemical Engineering Congress (APCChE) 2022, which took place from 9 to 12 August 2022 at Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre.

Chai was supervised by LKC FES academics Dr Pang Yean Ling, Dr Steven Lim and Ir Dr Chong Woon Chan. She said, “Initially, I joined the competition to expand my horizons in the field of chemical engineering. I was encouraged by my supervisor Dr Pang to take up the challenge. By surprise, I was informed that I was selected as one of the winners in the postgraduate category. This award signified the recognition of my effort. It motivates me to continue my research work on the right pathway.”

“My research paper title is ‘Enhanced sonocatalytic degradation of Congo Red by using oil palm empty fruit bunch derived cellulose/silver doped on titanium dioxide composite’. It addresses the disposal issue of oil palm empty fruit bunch (OPEFB) biomass waste by utilising the rich cellulose content as potential value-added nanomaterials. This research study demonstrates that the high catalytic performance of OPEFB-derived cellulose/silver doped on titanium dioxide composite could act as an efficient and stable catalyst in the sonocatalytic degradation of Congo Red,” Chai added.

Organised by the Chemical Engineering Technical Division of the Institute of Engineers Malaysia (IEM), the 6th IEM Research Paper Competition 2021 aimed to invite chemical engineers from the Asia Pacific region to share their insights and innovations.

APCChE 2022, on the other hand, is a unique platform for R&D experts, professional chemical engineers, academicians, and students especially from this Asia Pacific region and from all over the world to exchange their ideas and expertise in these research areas and foster collaborations for the benefit of the chemical engineering profession. Its theme this year was Working Towards a Sustainable Society.
