Students awarded for their outstanding achievements at appreciation ceremony

The Student Awards and Representatives Appreciation Ceremony for the 2022/2023 batch was organised by the Department of Student Affairs (DSA) to celebrate and give recognition to the students for their achievements and contributions.
Present at the ceremony were UTAR President Ir Prof Dato’ Dr Ewe Hong Tat, Vice President for Student Development and Alumni Relations Prof Dr Choong Chee Keong, Faculty of Business and Finance Dean Assoc Prof Dr Au Yong Hui Nee, Faculty of Science Dean Assoc Prof Dr Lim Tuck Meng, M. Kandiah Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences Deputy Dean for Student Development and Industrial Training Assoc Prof Dr Leong Pooi Pooi, DSA Kampar Head Chiang Jeng Fong, and DSA Sungai Long Head Loh Nyuk Leung, along with staff, students, and award recipients.

Prof Dato’ Ewe said, “This is a momentous occasion where we come together to honour those who have excelled academically, displayed remarkable leadership, and contributed significantly to the vibrant campus life we cherish. To all the award recipients, I extend my heartfelt congratulations. Your relentless pursuit of excellence and unwavering commitment to learning have made you shine among your peers. Your achievement, whether in academics, sports, arts, or community engagement, is a testament to your passion, determination, and talent.”
He also said, “In this ever-changing world, the skills you have honed, the knowledge you have gained, and the experiences you have embraced within our university community will be the foundation of your future success. As you step forward into new challenges and opportunities, I have no doubt that you will continue to inspire and impact those around you positively. Today, we also extend our gratitude to our student representatives for sports teams, who have been the driving force behind many sports teams that have enriched our students’ university experience. Your tireless efforts in advocating the importance of sports among UTAR students have not gone unnoticed. You have shown true leadership by fostering sports culture and creating a positive sports environment for students.”

Tan Xuan Qing said that he is honoured to be given this award and has plans to improve the prototype and gradually miniaturise it to a size that can be comfortably worn on the hand. Tan developed the Vien Watch, a wearable vein finder that projects vein patterns onto a patient’s skin.

Kan Vivian said effective communication and being both people-and task-oriented person are important traits in leadership. She hopes to be able to continue inspiring others to participate in events and develop their leadership skills, thus contributing to a better university experience. Kan made a positive impact as a guide during UTAR Open Day campus tours, impressing parents with her enthusiastic sharing of experiences, and was nominated as a mace bearer for one of UTAR’s Convocations.

Chen Yee Fei enthused that he has always liked filming and that it was an avenue for him to express his creativity and showcase his skills. His accomplishments included Judges’ Honourable mention for his short film titled “Mindframe” in the BMW Shorties competition; Production Manager for the award-winning short film titled “Where Time Stood Still,” which was recognised at Miffest 2022 and selected for the Oscar-qualifying Short Film Festival & Asia 2023; and Film Director for the inspirational short film “Game Boy”.
