Dr Hooi and her medals

Faculty of Creative Industries academic Dr Hooi Chee Mei and her team members, namely Miss Raganeswari Ramasamy, Dr Mariam Mohamad and Dr Mageswaran Sanmugam from Universiti Sains Malaysia won a Gold medal under the Virtual 3MT category for their paper titled “Integration of the main 21st century learning skills (4C’s) using an online learning platform via mobile devices: developing narrative writing skills among Malaysian upper secondary students” at the Virtual Innovation Competition 2023. At the same competition, the team also won a Bronze medal under the Tertiary (Science and Technology) category for their paper titled, “Vygotsky’s social development theory in developing narrative writing skills using an authentic writing module”. Dr Hooi and her team walked home with a medal and a certificate each.

The competition aimed to nurture the culture of innovation and design in the field of teaching and learning and other related fields among educators, students, and the public, and provide them a prestigious platform to participate and showcase their innovations and designs through a digital platform.

Dr Hooi explained, “The research on the Integration of the Main 21st Century Learning Skills (4C’s) Using an Online Learning Platform via Mobile Devices: Developing Narrative Writing Skills among Malaysian Upper Secondary Students aims to identify the usefulness of 21st century learning skills in developing students’ narrative writing skills using an online learning platform via mobile devices. Researchers created a narrative writing module known as 4C’s to WRITE module to practise narrative writing elements after school hours using technologies. The 4C’s of 21st century learning skills enabled students to communicate, collaborate, as well as use their critical thinking, and creativity thinking while they were incorporating among their group members to complete their activities.”

Speaking of the research that won the bronze medal, Dr Hooi said, “We investigated the effectiveness of the main 4C’s of 21st century learning skills to enhance narrative writing skills using the technology platform. This research incorporated Vygotsky’s social development theory to nurture the participants to practise narrative writing skills by using a created writing module. Social interaction and scaffoldings from social development theory are vital because they enable participants to communicate, collaborate, use their critical thinking and creative thinking to identify main ideas, organise ideas into a few paragraphs by following the elements of the plot for writing a story, as well as use proper grammar and vocabulary features.”
