LKC FES students win several prizes at Merdeka Sketch Competition 

Four UTAR students won prizes after showcasing their talents by sketching the iconic Merdeka 118 tower at the Merdeka Sketch Competition, held on 19 August 2023 at Merdeka Stadium, Kuala Lumpur.

The four students were Tan Yuan Kai, Chow Liang Cheng, Low Heng Shan, and Ida Wayan Sastra Adinata from Lee Kong Chian Faculty of Engineering and Science (LKC FES); they won the first, second, third and consolation prizes respectively. Tan walked away with RM300 while Chow, Low and Ida took home RM200, RM100 and RM50 respectively as their winning prize.

The competition was organised by the Malaysian Institute of Architects (Pertubuhan Akitek Malaysia, PAM) in collaboration with PNB Merdeka Ventures Sdn Bhd, under the programme “Kuala Lumpur Architecture Festival 2023” (KLAF2023). The theme of the competition was ‘NEXT100’.

The participants of the competition consisted of PAM members, architecture students, and individuals under the age of 45. They showcased their talents by sketching the iconic Merdeka 118 tower from the viewpoints of Stadium Merdeka or Stadium Negara. Equipped with A3 cartridge paper provided by the organisers, participants used stationery tools to create their sketches. Staying true to competition rules, only traditional sketching was allowed, without digital tools. The main focus was on accurately depicting the Merdeka 118 tower. Judges evaluated entries based on artistic impact, composition, skillful hatching techniques, and creative use of monochrome shading. These aspects determined the winners of the competition.
