First runner-up at HESF Table Tennis Women's Doubles

The Higher Education Sports Fest (HESF) 2023, organised by the Ministry of Higher Education (MoHE), is regarded as one of the prestigious competitions among all IPTA & IPTS in Malaysia. This year, the event took place at Universiti Sultan Zainal Abidin (UniSZA), located in Kuala Nerus, Terengganu from 25 October 2023 to 29 October 2023. The competition included several sports, including petanque, table tennis, archery, tug of war, volleyball and rugby.

Five UTAR students from Sungai Long Campus participated in the HESF Table Tennis competition under the men’s single, women’s single and women’s doubles categories.

In the men’s single category, Sam Yuk Siong secured victory in the group stage and round 32. However, he lost against a player from Tunku Abdul Rahman University of Management and Technology (TAR UMT) in the round of 16. As for the women’s single, both Tan Zhe Yan and Wong Joe Yan emerged victorious in the group stage but were eliminated in the round of 16 and the quarterfinals, respectively.

As for the women’s doubles, Chua Wan Ying and Ow Yao Pin won a total of six games and successfully reached the finals. However, they were defeated by players from Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), ultimately securing the 1st runner-up position.
