This award recognises a University whose research has been done with either the private sector or an international partner and where the results are now tangible and adopted by industry. Thus, this award was awarded to UTAR for Dr Yamuna’s research work with Bridge Field Resources Sdn Bhd. For this achievement, Dr Yamuna walked away with a trophy, certificate, several gifts from the competition sponsors, and Ad spaces worth up to RM30,000 by Malaysiakini and Digital News Asia.

Acknowledged by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI), the Top In Tech Innovation Awards 2022 was organised by Malaysiakini and Digital News Asia. Its main objective is to celebrate remarkable innovators and recognise their ground-breaking technology adoptions. Not only that, it aimed to honour their efforts in using innovation to uplift the economy out of a downturn and accelerate its growth.

There was a total of eight categories, namely Innovator of the Year, Best Brick & Mortar Adoption, Most Impactful Academic-Industry Collaboration, Most Impactful Public Sector Agency Driving Digital Adoption, Most Value Creation, Most Promising, Best Pivot and Young Innovator of the Year. The winners were selected based on the assessment of the category lead judges, facilitating judges and panel judges, all of whom were influential and well-known innovators in the country.

Sharing about her winning project, Dr Yamuna said, “The project is called ProGreenRubber. It was made in collaboration with Bridge Fields Resources Sdn Bhd. I have been working with them on this project from 2018 to 2019. We managed to secure a Public Private Research Network Grant (PPRN) from the Ministry of Education. With the grant, the company was able to produce high-quality recycled rubber which was successfully commercialised, not to mention, the product was also internationally patented. Finally, the research and development of the product were conducted by UTAR.”

Dr Yamuna added, “I feel both excited and motivated. This achievement has given a positive and meaningful impact on the company and the University. The company has also been very supportive of the research activities conducted in FEGT related to rubber technology; for which I am very thankful. Furthermore, I am happy that this project also solves environmental problems related to waste rubber products, as it can greatly benefit society.”

UTAR congratulates Dr Yamuna for her amazing achievement in winning the Top In Tech Innovation Awards 2022.
