Six wins at the 5th Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area-Asean International University Bamboo Design and Construction Competition

Two teams from UTAR won a total of six awards at the 5th Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area· ASEAN International University Bamboo Design and Construction Competition, held on 18 December 2022. About 1,000 teams from 500 universities from Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Laos, Vietnam, Hong Kong, Macau and China participated in the competition.

The competition aimed to build an international platform for innovation and creativity with global influence. Through the combination of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao greater bay area and the talents of ASEAN universities, the competition explored a new mode of innovative collaboration, attracting all universities to exhibit the same understanding while forming deep cooperation between China and ASEAN. Themed, “半亭 ‘Half Pavilion’, the competition used the special architectural form of a half-pavilion, to create a new landscape of visible profile bamboo structure, a new scene of bamboo structure that can be seen in section and a new exploration of structural integrated design based on weather resistance.

3005 VICE VERSA

The project “3005 Vice Versa” won Competition Champion First Place, First Place for Comprehensive Expression, First Place for Best Creativity and Second Place for Engineering and Structural Design. The team members for project “3005 Vice Versa” were Lee Kong Chian Faculty of Engineering and Science (LKC FES) Bachelor of Science (Honours) Architecture students Liong Zhi Ying, Boon Jing Jack, Chan Qi Wei, Oo Zhi Ling, Wong Puy Yan and they were supervised by Specialist I Ar Loh Khang Yong. The team walked away with a cash prize of RMB10,000, a trophy and certificates.

3018 BEYOND THE EDGE

The project “3018 Beyond The Edge” won Competition Champion Second Place and Second Place for Comprehensive Expression with a cash prize of RMB6,000, a trophy and certificates. The team members were LKC FES Bachelor of Science (Honours) Architecture students Lim Zhi Xing, Eden Ling, Lam Jia En, Ng Keqing and Yip Xiao Tung. They were supervised by LKC FES Specialist I Abd Muluk bin Abd Manan.

The competition was co-organised by Nansha Birdpark, UTAR Department of Architecture and Sustainable Design and South China University of Technology School of Architecture. It was supported by Pertubuhan Arkitek Malaysia (PAM), Malaysia Architecture Students Alliance (MASA), Malaysian Bamboo Society, Southeast Asian Designer Alliances (SADA) and UTAR Centre of Sustainable Design (COSA).

The juries of the competition were Yangcheng Design Alliance Chairman Sheng YuHong, PAM 2022/2023 Vice President Ar Adrianta Aziz, South China University of Technology Zhong GuanQiu, Malaysian Bamboo Society Ir Major (Ret) Ahmad Mazlan Othman, UTAR LAr Dr Beh Jing Han, University of St Joseph Ar Nuno Suares, Architect Ar Dr Eleena Jamil, City University of Hong Kong Dr Charlie Q. L. Xue, COSA Chairperson Dr Lim Poh Im, and Southeast Asia Designers Alliance Vice Chairman Iris Hong-Yi Ying.
