A
team of five students from UTAR won the “Most Articles Completed” award at
the Facts for Democracy: A Wikipedia Editathon for Youth Democratic
Engagement, held from 16 until 18 June 2023 at Melia Hotel, Kuala Lumpur.
They walked away with a trophy and a certificate of participation each.
The
team consisted of M. Kandiah Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences
students Nurul Jannah Ong and Siti Nur Hikmah binti Satar, and Lee Kong
Chian Faculty of Engineering and Science students Loke Edi Son, Shu Yi Siong
and Damon Lim Ching Ann.
The
participants were required to translate Wikipedia content from English to
Bahasa Melayu. The Editathon saw the publications of nearly 300 articles in
Bahasa Malaysia of which 97 were originally written and not translated from
English.
Feeling grateful, the team said, “We gained a lot of experience during the
competition. Throughout the three days, we were able to establish a good
rapport with other university students of various backgrounds; it enabled us
to gain insight into our country’s democracy from another perspective. The
strategy of our team was to utilise modern technology to its fullest
potential in order to produce a good number of articles. All in all, we
encourage more UTAR students to engage in activities promoted by the
Department of Students Affairs to hone their soft skills.”
The
Editathon aimed to encourage students to produce original democracy-related
content in Bahasa Melayu on Wikipedia. Organised by The Delegation of the
European Union to Malaysia in collaboration with the Embassy of Sweden in
Kuala Lumpur, the 24-hour Editathon saw the participation of 65 students
from various renowned higher education institutions across Malaysia.
