Three teams of students from UTAR came out victorious when they took home
the grand prize, second prize and third prize at the Developer Day
Hackathon, organised by Samsung Malaysia Electronics in collaboration with
UTAR (Lee Kong Chian Faculty of Engineering and Science (LKC FES) and
Unovate Centre) and Taylor’s University from 14 June 2023 to 15 June 2023 at
REXKL.
The hackathon provided a platform where students could pitch their creative
ideas to enrich app UI/UX for the Galaxy Z Fold and the Galaxy Z Flip series
and come up with new possibilities for the foldable form factor.
Grand prize winners: GPT-0
The grand prize winner was team GPT-0,
which consisted of Faculty of Information and Communication Technology
(FICT) students Lee Wei Song and Tan Sin Chee, and Faculty of Accountancy
and Management (FAM) student Loi Jia Yee. The team pitched ideas for
enhancing the layout on the app of an eCommerce platform, which enabled
customers to zoom in and out for a better view of products as well as
efficient use of space. Meanwhile, the pitch also provided ideas for sellers
to leverage Flex Mode for live streaming. The team took home a Samsung
Galaxy Z Flip4 each.
Second prize winner: Train Chaser
The second prize winner was FICT student Wooi Zhuang Ru from team
Train Chaser. Wooi, who walked
away with a Samsung Tab S8 as her winning prize, pitched ideas to optimise
the app of a food delivery service. According to Wooi, by leveraging Multi
View on the Galaxy Z Fold4, users will be able to see the menu on the left
while reviewing cart items on the right; be able to add coupons on the page
itself, and expand the cart page to full screen for easy editing. Moreover,
by utilising Flex Mode on the Galaxy Z Flip4, users will be able to see
their order summary on top, while chatting with customer support on the
screen at the bottom.
Third prize winners: Fold Fusion
Winning the third prize was team Fold
Fusion. The team members consisted of LKC FES students Chong Siow Yen,
Choo Jia Zheng and Wong Hsin, and FICT student Ileladewa Oluwatimilehin
Adekunle. The team pitched a new app design for an eCommerce platform. The
app design offered a more adaptable view and responsive layout to address
the problem of a cluttered layout. The team also produced and demonstrated
their prototype as proof of concept for their UI/UX. Each of them took home
a Samsung Galaxy Watch5 Pro as their winning prize.
The theme of the hackathon was
‘Reimagining Foldables for Malaysians’.
It aimed at providing a platform for young talents to unleash their
creativity and come up with innovative ideas to rewrite the apps experience.
The hackathon saw the participation of 38 UTAR students from both campuses.
The judges of the event were Samsung Malaysia Electronics Sdn Bhd Product
Testing Manager Easkin Poon, Application Operations Manager Kim Kyo Jun, LKC
FES Department of Internet Engineering and Computer Science academic Dr Lee
Ming Jie, LKC FES Department of Internet Engineering and Computer Science
academic Dr Nawaf Hassan Mohammed Mohsen Shrifan, SoyaCincau.com CEO and
Co-Founder Amin Ashaari, and Amanz Media Sdn Bhd CEO Ikhwan Nazri.
The Developer Day hackathon provided an opportunity for the participants to
leverage Samsung and Android platforms’ capabilities to flex tech creativity
and bring real-life benefits to users. Taking place from 14 to 15 June 2023,
three winning teams were selected each day across the two-day event,
bringing it to a total of six winning teams, three of which were UTAR teams
who participated on day two.
