Four Bachelor of Arts (Honours) Graphic Design and
Multimedia students from the Faculty of Creative Industries (FCI) emerged
victorious at the Climate Communication Challenge 2023, held from 25 March
2023 to 15 June 2023. The announcement of the winner, however, was made on 6
October 2023.
Yong Keng Hui stood out by being one of the ten
recipients of the Special Jury Award, earning him a prize of RM1,000.
Additionally, the remaining three students, namely Jacquelin Lay Jielin, Gan
Xin Yi, and Tong Zhi Rong, were recognised with the Outstanding Award. They
walked away with RM500 each.
The objectives of the challenge were to increase
tertiary students’ knowledge and competency on possible Net Zero Pathways
for Malaysia through content creation, based on the ‘Securing Our Future:
Net Zero Pathways for Malaysia’ report.
Ms Jeevamalar a/p Kumarasamy from FCI
Department of Multimedia Design and Animation assigned the competition as a
project for Creative Visual Design 1 since one of the course requirements
was to design a poster. There were 25 entries from this class and all
students received an e-certificate of participation.
Yong said, “Winning this competition feels truly
unexpected. I was both shocked and elated when I learned that I had won the
award. The greatest significance lies in the fact that my design has been
recognised by the public, which boosts my confidence in my abilities and
provides the motivation to keep working hard and improving myself.”
Gan said, “Through this challenge, I had the
opportunity to address real-world issues and create a meaningful poster for
the world. I feel happy and excited because this is my first time winning a
poster design competition. I’m also very grateful to my lecturer, who has
guided me throughout this competition.”
Jacquelin Lay
said, “I believe the contest served as a platform to raise awareness about
the issues of climate change. By participating in the competition, I can
spread awareness about the significance of addressing climate change and its
impact. This recognition has given me more confidence and motivation to
continue my studies and design work.”
Tong said, “I joined this competition because I
wanted to raise awareness among the public. Even though it may not reach a
large audience, I believe that awareness will gradually grow, and people
will begin to act. By doing so, all living beings can live together happily
in the future.”

Communication Challenge
The Climate Communication Challenge is a programme
designed to enhance the understanding and skills of tertiary students
regarding potential Net Zero Pathways for Malaysia. This initiative is
centred on content creation inspired by the ‘Securing Our Future: Net Zero
Pathways for Malaysia’ report. It presents an excellent opportunity for
students, budding artists, and content creators to utilise this platform for
the creation and exhibition of their work. Furthermore, participants will
also gain the opportunity to amplify the visibility of their creations
through WWF-Malaysia’s channels.
