Students secure Gold, Silver and Bronze medals at Kancil Science Competition 2023

The Kancil Science Competition 2023 was conducted physically nationwide on 14 June 2023 at the participants’ respective schools and institutions. The Department of Student Affairs and the Centre for Foundation Studies of Sungai Long Campus sponsored a total of 10 students to participate in the competition. The competition took place from 10:00 am to 11:00 am at KB313, UTAR Sungai Long Campus. It was invigilated by two lecturers, namely Ms Kong Jee Kim, who is also CFS Head of Science and Engineering Department, and Ms Precilla Robert.

Out of the 10 students who participated under the Delta category, Han Hong Chou won the Gold Medal; Saw Jin Er and Eunice Wong Luo Ee won the Silver Medal; and Tan En Xin, Tan Xi Jie and Choo Ee Shen won the Bronze Medal. In addition, six students were awarded Honourable Mention at the competition.

Prior to the competition, Ms Precilla Robert, Ms Lee Cin Dee and Ms Tan Zhen Jee, the lecturers from CFS-SL had conducted three training sessions (Chemistry, Biology and Physics) to brief and guide the students on the scope of coverage for the competition. During these sessions, which lasted for 1.5 hours each, various problems and questions related to the competition were discussed and addressed. The purpose of these training sessions was to prepare the students and equip them with the necessary knowledge and skills for the competition.

Kancil Science Competition is an annual competition for primary, secondary and pre-university students that aims to challenge students’ science knowledge through critical thinking, problem-solving, and general scientific knowledge. More than 56,000 students from about 3000 schools have participated in this competition since 2018. In Kancil 2022, there were 18,477 participants representing over 771 schools from all over Malaysia. This competition is also a platform for students to be selected for the national team and participate in the International Junior Science Olympiad (IJSO).
