UTAR shines at Kejohanan Sukan Masiswa Zon Utara 2024

Exhibiting true sportsmanship: UTARians proudly showcasing their medals and trophies

The recent Kejohanan Sukan Masiswa Zon Utara 2024 witnessed a display of excellent sportsmanship and talent from the students of UTAR.

Held from 1 to 3 March 2024 at Tunku Abdul Rahman University of Management and Technology (TAR UMT), Penang Branch Campus, the annual tournament organised by Majlis Sukan IPTS Malaysia (MASISWA) brought together private learning institutions from the northern regions of Peninsular Malaysia.

UTAR’s participation in various sports, including table tennis, badminton, and chess showcased UTAR’s commitment to athletic excellence and camaraderie.

Badminton Brilliance:

UTAR’s contingent delivered incredible performances in the competition.  

Banking and Finance student Ng Jia Qian, along with Accounting student Ng Jia Shuen, emerged as champions, clinching the gold medal and trophy in the Women’s Doubles event. Food Science student Ashley Yun Wei Yuen and Foundation in Arts student Teh Xiao Jing earned the first runner-up position, securing the silver medal in the Women’s Doubles as well.

Meanwhile, in the Women’s Singles category, Jia Qian secured the position of first runner-up, earning the silver medal for her outstanding performance.

In the Men’s Doubles category, Entrepreneurship student Lew Guan Xi and Communications and Networking student Dave Chong Jian demonstrated exceptional teamwork and skill, earning the title of first runner-up and clinching the silver medal. Meanwhile, Petrochemical Engineering student Tan Kai Shiuan and Advertising student Leong Yik Hung achieved the second runner-up, securing the bronze medal.

Additionally, in the Men’s Singles category, Computer Science student Chew Jian An achieved the second runner-up position, earning the bronze medal for his performance.

Last but not least, in the Mixed Doubles event, Financial Economics student Chen,Mai and Teh secured the first runner-up position, earning the silver medal for their exceptional partnership on the court. Additionally, Leong and Jia Shuen demonstrated their prowess by clinching the second runner-up spot and earning the bronze medal in the same category.

Representing the badminton team, the team enthused, “As members of the UTAR badminton team, our team spirit and shared commitment to continuous improvement drove us through this competition. We were determined to push ourselves to the limit and face off against the best in every match. Furthermore, each member of our team gave their utmost effort during training sessions and matches, pushing one another to reach new heights. Winning this championship is a remarkable achievement for us, affirming our dedication, hard work, and passion for the game.”

Chess Conquest:

Immersed in the chess atmosphere: UTAR players deeply focused on the game

UTAR’s chess team showcased their strategic prowess, with Foundation in Arts Yeoh Yuan Hui emerging as the champion in the Men’s Individual category. The team also secured the second runner-up in the Men’s Group category, with contributions from Agricultural Science student Chin Li Wei, Computer Science student Ong Kok Zhao, Communications and Networking student Tan Kok Fu, and Computer Science student Jayasree Chandragopal.

On behalf of the team, Yeoh stated, “Chess encompasses not only mental and physical prowess but also relies on the psychology of the players. Every subtle gesture made by your opponent can offer insight into their thought process.”

Table Tennis Triumph:

The UTAR table tennis team participated in the event with a contingent of 10 players and secured the first runner-up position

UTAR’s table tennis team demonstrated their competence on the court by securing the first runner-up and garnering the silver medal.

Led by captains Computer Science student Yeap Shevon and Electronics Engineering student Chey Chi Hong, the team consisted of Biomedical Science student Lim Kai Yun, Psychology student Christy Ng See Yaan, Statistical Computing and Operations Research student Tan Chung Jia, Computer Science student Chua Jin Hui, Biomedical Science student Goh Jia Jin, Finance student Ho Jia Heng, Computer Science student Wong Jenn Jia and Public Relations student Lai Young Chi.

Throughout the competition, they displayed amazing skills and determination.

When prompted to recount their victory at the Kejohanan Sukan Masiswa Zon Utara 2024, the team expressed their enthusiasm, stating, “In table tennis, UTAR’s team demonstrated resilience and unity, clinching the first runner-up position and securing the silver medal. While the wins are undeniably worthy, it was the constant support and encouragement exchanged among teammates. UTAR has provided us with a nurturing environment for consistent training, which stands as the cornerstone for enhancing the skills of each player.”

UTAR’s outstanding achievements at Kejohanan Sukan Masiswa Zon Utara 2024 highlight the university’s commitment to holistic development and excellence in sports. The event not only provided a platform for students to exhibit their athletic talents but also fostered camaraderie and sportsmanship among participants.
